Having had brilliant recommendations from the combined wisdom of PH in the past regarding campsites I am after your advice again.
Our family would like a lakeside holiday in the Alps this summer and Lake Annecy looks beautiful, not too huge as we have a young family and close enough to some interesting places (Geneva, Mont Blanc).
Has anyone taken their caravan there before? Where did you stay? Also advice such as where did you break your journey as 12 hours from Calais would be intolerable with a young family.
Sorry for all the questions but PH came up trumps before.
Thanks in advance.

I cant help you with the caravan bit but totally agree, a stunning spot to visit. Well worth renting one of the self drive motor boats and going for a cruise, the kids will love it! The old town is fascinating and if you can find a way, do one of the segway tours. Quite a few of the mountain resorts are open during the summer and well worth a visit. Morzine is easy to get to and Lake Montriond up there is a nice place to idle away a day with little ones. Chamonix has loads to see as well as a train up to the glacier.
We stopped at Beaune to break the journey, very pretty.

15 years ago my parents stayed here.

I went on and wrote my final submission for the APC in 30 deg C, but surrounded by snow topped mountains. It was very nice.
Did have a trip to Annency and was also liked it.
Troyes/Dijon for a break - depending on how far you travelled in the UK

Lovely place, I camped at Camping Le Solitaire du Lac. The campsite wine and pizza is dirt cheap and bloody lovely!
Ha! So did we. Takeaway pizza by the lake was ace. It's just off the cycle path that runs along the lake and there's a boat hire place a shortish ride away at the south end of the lake. The water's piggin' cold, mind.
Thank you for all the replies. Your comments have not changed our minds. The problem has been ferry costs for when we want to travel. Because of my job and having a school age daughter we have to go in the summer holidays. The best value option appears to be with Eurocamp Independent as they have a good deal with the ferry companies and have options to have an overnight stop there and back.
Having a folding camper instead of a caravan also saves a bit on autoroute tolls.
Thanks again.

I can't comment on the camping, but we rented a gite for 2 weeks in June last year in St Jorioz. THe lake is lovely and there's lots of great walking if you get bored of it. The traffic jams in and out of Annecy and around the lake on weekends however were not so good and no doubt they'll be worse in holiday season, so I'd allow extra time for getting around on a weekend.

There is a regular, time-tabled boat bus thingy goes round the lake, much better than the roads in high season.Chicken Chaser said:

SWMBO was towing twins. The cycle path beside the lake is more or less flat.
Hills don't bother me, but I'll have to take the mountain bikes for the trailer rather than the beloved roadieAs for the OP, surely the purpose of a caravan is to allow you to roofie the kids and nail the drive in one whilst they snooze in the back?

I'd love to do it overnight, but that would be me useless for the rest of the holiday! We have driven from Poole to Sheffield non-stop with the kids. It was good timing as we left just in time for our youngest to have his afternoon nap. Daughter is fine as she just watches DVDs.Gassing Station | Holidays & Travel | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
