Hi all

i'm off to Dubai with the missus for the first time for our tenth wedding anniversary at the end of July (my 2.5year old is not coming wink ) we get there early Friday (got early check-in booked) and fly back Monday morning, so basically i've got from Friday afternoon to Sunday night to fill. Were looking to relax, so no extreme sports or desert safaris, i also appreciate how hot its going to be at the end of July!

Were staying at the Sofitel on the Palm, i've booked a suite so have access to the free bar at 6-8pm in the club room, based on what people are saying about drink prices in dubai it feels like we'd be well advised to make the most of those 2 hours!

So our anniversary in on the Friday and i was thinking do Friday Bunch somewhere Friday afternoon - recommendations welcome, hotel bar for free drinks then probably bed lol after not much sleep and a stomach full of alcohol and food we'll be knackered.

Saturday i was originally thinking, go to the dubai mall and up the burj to the viewing deck in the morning, then back to the hotel for a chill round the pool early dinner somewhere at the hotel/atlantis, hit the free bar and back to the burj for the fountains and drinks in Atmosphere Lounge - is that to much Burj? i do have a thing for skyscrapers lol

Sunday i want to do afternoon tea at the Burj al Arab, then i'm open to suggestions for all the in between time, i don't want to cram to much in, but on the other hand i want to make the most of the time there - plus my 20 year anniversary if a long way off lol

I can't help much with brunches as that's not my thing but I will say book your 'at the top' burj tickets a good few days in advance, it's often very popular so the good times sell out quite quickly. I think you need to book at the burj al Arab as well, we got turned away last time we went to go there for a drink as we didn't have a reservation, that was peak season though.

hi thanks, yes i was planning to book as far in advance as possible, appears for the burj tickets you can only book 4 weeks before the day, i've also read that about the burj al arab, if your names not down you not getting in lol, seriously the afternoon tea is like £220 so it better be worth it, thats a lot of a plate of sandwiches and fancy cakes wink

It is but I guess if it's something you're only going to do once you might as well do it right!

I regularly visit Dubai but I tend to stick to the Marina area as that's where my dad lives. I'm happy sitting on the balcony listening to and watching the supercars head down to the JBR.

The souk madinat is near to the burj al Arab and has some tat/antique shops and a selection of not so pricey restaurants if you find yourself in that area with time to spare.

One of the best things about Dubai is that despite its size it's bloody cheap to get taxis literally anywhere. We spent over an hour at rush hour in a taxi going from the marina to deira and it was less than £20

Friday Brunch

Traiteur at the Park Hyatt offers excellent quality food. It's one of the more upmarket brunches here and is located Creek Side at the Park Hyatt - lovely hotel BTW. It's a bit of a hike from your hotel on the Palm however, about 35mins by cab.

Just a stones throw from the Sofitel you have Nobu at Atlantis which offers excellent Japanese food and champagne brunch packages. Also highly recommended.

Have a good trip!

Went for afternoon tea in the Al Arab nearly 3 years ago, it was lovely. Couldn't get enough of the food, though small portions! Can guarantee a few fancy supercars parked outside it.

Hi
Had a weeks holiday there this year as my brother lives there. They tended to know which bars had a happy hours and used them accordlingly .
What they did have was a book called the Dubia entertainer , which is a voucher booklet and well worth it. I belive it was about £100 ,but a couple of meals and it's covered its cost.
There are some on e-bay (331882127519) item number for e bay .
Might be worth a look as food and drink out are very expensive , but taxis really cheap
I personally loved the place despite the cost.
Enjoy your trip

I'd recommend you rent a car as there is no public transport that's worth using.

I disagree but if you do rent go big. The standard of driving in Dubai is absolutely appalling and given that the locals drive land cruisers and the likes you won't want to be in a Chevrolet matiz in the event of an accident.

Really ? I saw a metro that's slow and doesn't go near anywhere. And very few buses, its a city resigned around cars.

Taxis are so cheap I always just use them they class as public transport no? You'd struggle to spend more on taxis in a day than you would hiring a car and you can drink. Don't bother with the tram it's st. The metro is ok but a bit slow. The monorail on the palm is the worst.

Taxi or Uber is your best bet.

As noted above, Taxis are very cheap in comparison to the UK.

You can rent a corolla type car for £100 a week, petrol is cheap too.

Some distances are large and you can leave the city if you're staying a bit longer. I've always deemed it worthwhile to get a car.

Gold market may be worth a look round, lots of shopping malls if you want to get out of the heat. I wouldn't bother renting a car as taxis are everywhere.

Absolutely if you wish to head out of the city it makes sense. I wouldn't want the hassle of driving though if staying in the city, the road network is so badly designed and the standard of driving so low I just couldn't be bothered with it all. To each their own though

+1 on using the Entertainer vouchers - well worthwhile with a bit of planning

You can buy the Entertainer App as an alternative to the books on the tills. Just generate a code on the phone and show it to the person who brings the bill. Last time it paid for itself in a BOGOF brunch at Beachcombers which was about AED 625 per person. With the app itself only about AED 525 that one visit brought a saving. Used it on the yellow boats too - cant remember the discount. Used it on a curry and a few other bits and bobs.

We found the Metro pretty good - Cheap, clean and went nearly everywhere we wanted to, but our hotel was near Salah Al Din (5 minutes walk) station, not on the Palm or beach.

Taxis, as others mentioned are pretty cheap if you want to go anywhere else.

We weren't there long, but I wouldn't have bothered renting a car if I'd been there for a week.

thanks all, well i booked Saffron for Friday Brunch its pretty convenient for the Sofitel, i've booked Afternoon Tea at the Burj al Arab on the Sunday and drinks at At.mosphere in the evening too. just waiting for the tickets to become available for "at the top" on the Saturday.

i was planning to use taxis to travel about, no intention of renting a car.

can anyone offer advice to my missus on what you can wear out and about, the advice seems massively conflicting! the dress code at At.mosphere for women says "Elegant feminine attire" err... what the heck does that mean? most people are saying other than the malls the dress code is pretty relaxed?
