We're doing a California road trip in August and have a few people and places around SF to visit, so for two nights we could do with staying somewhere where we can get to the city, Concord and Marin County easily. The above areas look good, so which would be the 'nicest' bearing in mind that we won't be spending all that much time near the hotel. Maybe it doesn't matter if they're all much the same!

Thanks

Colleges/Universiries often rent campus lodgings in holiday periods. Look at booking.com; they're often there, and quite inexpensive.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I think that may be a little down market...

Sausalito is nice, but probably not that cheap.

Most of Marin County is a bit barren and dull, more like Southern California.

I'd stay in the city if it was me... Don't underestimate the weight of traffic and the time it might take to get around from some of the places you mention.

My Brother in Law used to live at Larkspur (Marin County) and commute across to SF on the ferry (past St Quentin) each day - That's actually a nice place to live and a cool way to commute (lovely view to start/end your day), but I don't know of any hotels around there.

Sausalito is a really nice small town. Great view across the bay to SF.
Oakland and Berkley I find a bit industrial.
Maybe you could drop down a little and cross the San Mateo bridge and stay in Half Moon Bay or Pacifica.

Hmm... Sausalito and Pacifica look lovely but I think we'll have to live with the boring area as per the title. I don't think we'll actually be at the hotel much anyway, we've got a lot of ground to cover!

Cheers

Good luck, I'm sure you'll have a great time. Lots of great places north of SF.
Napa and Somoma Valley's are brilliant with loads of great small towns and great food.
California is ace.
