My wife and I are flying to Newark airport in a month and have hired a car for 7 days. We're ending the trip with a couple of nights in Manhattan (we've been before) but looking for ideas to spend the first 7 days on a mini road trip. I don't want to spend every day driving, although don't mind putting in one or two long hauls. I thinking possibly Boston via Cape Cod (Provincetown).

Any suggestions?

We did it the different way round, starting in Boston then Cape Cod then to Manhattan via Newport Rhode Island. Newport is a very interesting and historical place where they ran the Americas cup yatching event from, one of the highlights of the trip and definitely worth several hours.

The Breakers, the summer house of the Vanderbuilt's is well worth a visit they did own most of the railways of the USA at sometime and gifted New York Grand Central station so it is rather plush.

Nice hotels round there too.

We did a trip to Gettysburg, Frank Lloyd Wright's FallingWater house, Niagara and the Finger Lakes, which you could easily do in 4 days from Newark, leaving a day or two to take in some more on New England.

To spend a bit less time in the car, you could head south via Philadelphia to DC, and maybe take in the colonial town of New Castle in Delaware (shameless plug - I used to live there).

Great suggestions above, I've travelled extensively in that region and would agree.

I always stay at Mill street inn in Newport. The cliff walk is worth while. Also, the houses are good to tour especially Breakers.
I like Salem in MA but wouldn't go out of my way to go there. Just a nice place to stay in Autumn. The place goes crazy at Halloween as it is the origin of the witch trials.

Montreal is doable, driving up past Lake George and the Adirondacks.

Did a week there some years ago driving from Boston-Montreal-NYC-Boston in that direction - the drive through Vermont was pretty good for scenery as well, stopping in some pretty nice small towns on the way.

I have been to Montreal several times as it serves as a break from the US. I tend to stay in the W-Hotel because it is located near the old town. The absolute most important thing to do in Montreal is*............ Go under ground. If you have been and you do not know the meaning of this then you have not seen Montreal. Montreal is a city with 2 extreme temperature. bloody hot in the Summer and insanely cold in the Winter. As a result there is a city underground. It is a huge and complex maze of shopping centers. It is very easy to miss completely because all of the entrances are effectively hidden until you know what you are looking for.

If you are driving up from NYC, or Boston, be warned that they impose the speed limits on stretches of motorway where you may not be able to see any other cars. Also, those signs saying that they use planes and helicopters as speed traps are true! My last ticket was from the "Aviation Division". Disappointingly, they do not land to give you the ticket. They call it ahead and another cop pulls you.

(* Go to strip club because you can touch came close second)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm leaning towards an anti-clockwise loop via Rhode Island (Newport), Cape Cod (Provincetown) and Boston.

I am going see fishing this weekend off the coast of Connecticut. I have done it before from Cape Cod and it is excellent fun. We get 6+ people a crap load of alcohol and a captain. The last time we were catching fish constantly. This follows driving a NASCAR. The following picture is from when I did it last time

2 activities you can consider if you are driving in that area. The NASCAR is through a groupon

ETA I could not stand up because the suit was for a man 5'11" and if I stood up it gave me a very unflattering male camel toe
