Having tried the various options over the years, the UK basically shuts after autumn (and pubs stop feeding after 14:00 etc. and grumble like hell if you try to order at 13:45.). It is awkward finding stuff that opens on the day you are in the area. Big museums perhaps, tank museum in Bovington for example if it opens at that time of the year. That is a day out. Sort of.

City stuff would be the thing I think if staying in the UK. Go around a few?

That or a couple of pairs of boots and walk the coast around Cornwall. At least the hotels are cheaper out of season (excepting Xmas loony prices of course)

If you do decide to get a campervan here's some ideas of where you could go : http://www.autochoicebristol.com/blog/uks-top-5-be...
Then you could fish during the day, light fires at night, go beach combing..all sort of stuff!

I've got a 12yo and a 7yo. Winter holidays in the UK sounds like the worst imaginable to me... Summer are just about bearable when it's raining!

Check out the manor hotel in Devon (Okehampton). It's akin to centerparcs but is all inclusive. Accommodation is pretty rubbish but there's enough to do for a week - sports and arts and crafts. I've taken my kids there without the wife, but then again I like playing tennis
