Don't be a mug and go solely on price, then complain later about the lack of cover. Insurers simply love people who do this.
Ideally, start by working out what cover you need, what you would also like but don't actually need, and the amount for these, then you can seek a policy that meets your NEEDS not your wallet necessarily. That way you get what you want at an affordable price.
I've used Staysure for the past 6-7 years for single trips for my wife and I. We're both elderly and have pre existing conditions, and Staysure seem to provide the cover we NEED at an acceptable price.
I also agree with the prior poster that Saga are pretty good but they do have a minimum age requirement.

Like any insurance policy you don't know it its any good until you try to make a claim.
Mrs BC and took annual cover from an advert in the holiday section of the weekend newspapers. It was very competitive and seemed to cover all we needed. Then when we were on a diving holiday in the Cayman Islands Mrs BC's mother died unexpectedly so we had to return pronto. The insurance company rejected the claim stating existing condition which it wasn't. They also said that if we wanted to appeal their decision we had to do so in writing and give them 6 weeks to reply. I got a solicitors letter sent to them and they folded straight away BUT you really don't need that hassle at a time of stress.
The best advice I can give is go for a trusted name and not necessarily the cheapest.

I tend to go for one that offers a medium range package and a low excess.
If you look at most policies, they exclude cash unless in a locked safe and most charge more for electrical items ie anything worth claiming for and have a high excess attached.
So i tend to look for a policy that mainly covers the medical etc and try not to lose or break anything.
the other thing is that I have found that single trip insurance is cheaper than a multi, even when you go 3-4 times a year.
I just used insurefor.com fora Spanish trip.

I seem to recall Amex only works if you pay for your holiday with your Amex card.
IMHO you need travel insurance to cover you for cancellation, curtailment, a BIG medical emergency and repatriation, third-party liability and legal fees
The rest is just frills.
Yes you do have to pay for the holiday with Amex to benefit from the travel insurance UNLESS the travel company don't take it. In that case you can pay with another card and still have insurance cover.IMHO you need travel insurance to cover you for cancellation, curtailment, a BIG medical emergency and repatriation, third-party liability and legal fees
