Paris autos - Jose - never had one problem. Helped me with a bump when I had no excess waiver too. They r decent my whole family use them. Not expensive either
Used goldcar a lot 1st couple of years after we bought our place nr Marbella. They are fine in low season, but the queues anytime after April can be horrendous.

Pay a bit more now and use Paris. Cars are always perfect and no queueing... Straight outside and straight in to the car. Really friendly people.

Thanks for all the help, booked Centaur for £88 for 9 days, full to full, which is reasonable for the use we will get out of it. Will organise excess insurance, be ready for the hard sell, check the car thoroughly before and after and obviously enjoy my holiday. Will feedback my experience after my holiday
I am back booked a Fiat 500 and got a Fiat Panda, which I will admit struggled with 3 adults and suitcases but was fine for the limited use we had of it over 9 days. Car was £90 for 9 days, after I landed went to the hire desk, no queue, girl explained 2 options I had for insurance, option 1 being paying their excess cost and option 2 money being kept on my card in case there was damage (I already had excess insurance with me), which I chose, painless process. Went to carpark to pick up car, there were marks on the car which weren't on the sheet which the rep updated and away we went. Car was returned full, quickly checked over and signed off as being as required. Painless overall compared to my experience with RecordGo in Majorca last year. Would recommend Centaur

Excellent company and good prices. Used them loads in many countries, never had a problem. You can choose which rental company you are using too.
Just booked with these myself simple to do

A Fiat 500 is tiny so it's probably just as well. In 30 plus hires, I have never had a problem. The card loading is a scare tactic - it used to be 300 Euros, now it's 600 or more.

I have just stumbled across this discussion and wanted to give it a quick bump.

I am hiring from Gibraltar and using Brunos (I like the idea of zero excess) - any others used them recently?

Thanks!

Me! I use them every year and have never had any problem, they've upgraded me every year so far, and gave me an extra day's rental for free last year. Probably too late now, but I've got a discount code for their website which has always worked for me in the past if you want it?

Thanks for the kind offer, Gareth, but I've booked now.

I've not rented abroad before and all of the hire companies seem to say you get a 'collision waiver', but add you have to pay a £500 excess on everything. Bruno's Cars seem to be offering a genuine 'all in' price.

ETA - I did have a few concerns booking because on Trip Adviser there seem to be a lot of amazing reviews from people who have posted once, so the posts on this group put my minds at rest!

Are you staying in Gib or heading across the border into Spain ?

If the latter, I'd recommend arranging to collect the car from La Linea - just a short walk from the airport, no problem even with cases and could save you loads of time.

The Bruno's place is in La Linea, about 150m from the border

Thanks guys - apparently it's in a car park. Staying in Spain and apparently it can be a nightmare driving across the border so that was another one of the reasons I went for Bruno's.

Yes, it's an underground car park, seems a slightly weird set up as they don't appear to have an office there, but their guy turned up to meet us there and it all went smoothly.

To update this thread, I am hiring a car for 6 people from Malaga in the first week of the summer holidays, for 8 days.
Rip-off doesn't really adequately describe the tariffs for a Zafira but I started with the best online reviews of various companies (all have good and bad) and got the following results:

Brunos - I have used them before but hopelessly too much on this occasion.

Allinonecarhire - (Zafira or similar) - these quote a trouble free "nothing to worry about, all in one tariff" but they also wanted 627 Euros for 8 days hire. It was under £500 just before the end of May but went up after 1st June. They are open 24 hours though and my return was 4:30am. I would have booked them had I caught the lower price as that included the early hours return. they seemed appealing as they meet you with a card with your name at the airport so you don't get lost.

Cargest (Doblo 7 seater) - Quoted about 445 Euros. They accepted the request then, the following day, rejected it, saying they had no cars and no alternatives.

Marbenjo - a new one on me but mostly good reviews/lack of complaints. Through their own site, I could only get a Zafira and that was quite expensive, more than Allinone, when you added on the necessary extras.

Zest (formerly Economy Car Hire) - I know they are an agency but this proved interesting because, on their site, they offered a 7 seater Doblo through Marbenjo (who didn't offer me this as an option). In addition to a free additional driver and an "excess insurance" policy for £24, the total was £416 which, while still being in the "holy f***" category, was reasonable next to the others even though it involves a local 40 Euro outside hours charge.

All these involve a minibus to the nearby industrial estate and collection of the car there but reviews suggest collecting on airport can mean a wait of up to 1.5 hours in the summer holiday season. I'll update if I remember.

Yep. Last year I had to suffer a three and a half hour queue to pick up a car from them. When I left, the queue was the still the same length.

And the car was a shed.
I had the same experience of a 3 hour queue to get the car. The car was fine but I would never use them again. I'd use one of the big firms or the post about benalmadena cars sounds worth a punt.

http://www.autosnavarro.es/ - not a personal recommendation however have come highly recommended elsewhere. I shall be giving these guys a try in September. (Queues down in the hire car area are worse than ever at the moment).

I can't tell from your post if you've actually booked or not and I have no idea if they would have a suitable vehicle, especially at this notice, but for Malaga did you try Carlos at http://www.benalmadenacars.net , who are mentioned at the beginning of this thread?

I've used Economy Car Hire before without any issues.
Increasingly, they and other sites tell you who you are hiring the car with so you can now pick which company you want to use and avoid the crap ones. You also get a cheaper deal than going direct.
