Hi chaps, I had a holiday plan in place but it's fallen to pieces this week. So rather than cancel the time off, I want to go somewhere solo for a week. I've narrowed it down to these three places but I'm finding it very hard to decide and flights etc are dwindling.

So, Cornwall. Obviously the cheapest option, I can drive my own car, no language troubles, very pretty, but weather is not guaranteed. I love this part of England and it's been a long time since I've been.

Italy...Naples? Turin? Little drive to Como/Garda? Quite an expensive option but is it worth it and where would be best to go?

Slovenia...Looks absolutely stunning and I've had it in mind for a while. I adore Austria and it looks very similar, especially around the North region where you're only a short drive from Klagenfurt etc. But is it a good place to travel solo? Will anything catch me out? I imagine the language barrier will be noticeable.

Slovenia and Italy are pushing my budget but can you persuade me to either please? I'd really like to go abroad.

Thanks PHers! Would ideally like to book by tonight!

ETA: Wildcard - Switzerland? Basel, drive on to somewhere?

Have you looked at late deals on Inghams and Crystal Lakes? I've had some last minute bargains from there in the past, and Italy is often one of the cheapest places to come up on offer.

I'm keen on going to Slovenia myself, I too love Austria and Italy, but Slovenia does look good - a mate of mine went there a couple of weeks ago and really liked it.

I've been to Slovenia a few times in winter and summer. Kranjska Gora but been over the border (had a car crash near Klagenfurt) to Austria and Italy. Lovely place and nice people most of whom speak reasonable English. Triglav National Park is nice and Lake Bled is just a short drive. Llubijana is also worth a visit.
Was always very cheap.
Always stayed at Apartments Rozle

Been to Slovenia a couple of times, once on a Paragliding trip and second with my wife for a few days in Ljubljana. Both times were good. Could probably do a day trip to Zagreb or an overnight to Venice if you wanted.
Italy could be good as there's plenty to see and can take a drive down the Amalfi Coast. Vesuvius/Pompeii/Herculaneum/Naples/Sorrento. Could fly into Rome and have a day or two there and then drive down in a hire car. Probably more to do as a solo traveler compared with Slovenia, depending on what floats your boat.

ETA: just noticed you said Turin also. Rental Fiat 500 and it some of the Alpine passes?

Thanks chaps, I really appreciate the advice smile I'm still no closer to deciding really, I've hovered over the buy button a few times on flights to Ljubljana and then held off. I very much like the idea of going down to the Amalfi in a Fiat 500 and taking it all in. But Slovenia looks equally beautiful, some of the roads and lakes in the north are said to be brilliant.

Anyway, i'm going to mull it over while I make dinner, and hopefully come to a decision.

TBH, the flights to Slovenia are more than double of those to Italy which is a shame as I think if they were the same that's where I'd be going.

Most of my time will be hopefully hiking as I'm not one to sit on a beach/by a pool, I like to go out with my camera and find nice views.

Lake Como is looking appealing, seems to be lots to explore, and easy trains/buses to Switzerland for day trips. I could fly in to Milan and drive to the Lake and set up base. I'm wondering if Monza Circuit is open to visitors on weekdays? Would be one to tick off the bucket list!

On the other hand, I could set up base near Ljubljana and easily drive around the country to anywhere I fancy exploring.

Truly a first world problem but so frustrating.

p.s. I did look at inghams and crystal lakes, thank you for that, but nothing cheap at the moment. Kranjska Gora is a bit too North i think, I'd like to be below Triglav and maybe visit Trieste.

Will be passing through Slovenia with the family around this time next month, from Austria into Croatia and back out to Italy.

There seem to be quite a few budget flights into the airports such as Verona, and Bologna - so with suitable car hire just a short hop into Slovenia as well, and access to northern Italy as well - all depending on how long you have.

I'd suggest seeing Bologna as well, as we did an overnight stop between Milan and Venice, and the place has masses of history and character - so much so we are back for a bit longer this time. Rick Stein also covered it for his Long Weekend series..

Thanks for that, but Italy will have to wait for now I think, I've just booked flights to Ljubljana, now exploring AirBnB for a place to situate myself. I have no need for 4 star hotels etc as I'll be out nearly all of the time exploring with my camera. I'm sure i've made the right choice as excitement is now rushing through me and I can't wait to get there. This time next week i'll be packing smile

I am thinking North-West, then I can easily access Italy too if I really want to, well Trieste was already on my list. I'll update as I find somewhere smile

So this is now a 'where is a must see in Slovenia' thread smile

If the weathers on you might catch some paragliders practicing acro or SIV over Lake Bohinj. They take off from Vogel on the south side of the lake and head to the eastern side of the lake so they can practice manoeuvres with a rescue boat just in case. There's a few walks around the lake edge too if I remember right.
There's also a car train that goes through the mountain from bohinska bistrica (spelling) for not many euros.

As an Italian come back living to Italy I advice to come visit Italy but not in August if you can. Italy shuts down in August. In bigger cities in the north the best restuarants are closed, the cities are pretty dead. On the other hand on the coast and in monuntains there are crowds of people and prices goes up. I always go abroad in August.

Thanks chaps, I'll definitely be taking in Bohinj, Bled, and as much as Triglav as I can. And yes I will definitely spend some time near the Italian border, the little towns on the Adriatic coast look amazing.

I've decided to spend the first two nights in Ljubljana as it's a bit silly not to enjoy the old city for a bit, and then onwards to the North, looking at hotels/hostels etc now and it's shaping up nicely smile

Apparently there are some nice roads around the Soca valley (Bovec?) so I'll take that route smile

Please keep ideas coming.

And thanks for the advice on Italy, I read similar from a few people and helped me decide not to go. I'll save Italy for Spring/Autumn. smile
