Portugal Coast - road trip
Discussion
I was in Porto last summer, be aware that parking there is not good so best hire when you leave then no worries.
Go to the Taylors winery do the trip and have a silver service meal in their restaurant it's well worth the effort to walk up there.
Walk back and watch the kids jumping off the bridge, visit the station to take a look at the walls just unbelievable.

Worth going if both of us cannot stand Port? Go to the Taylors winery do the trip and have a silver service meal in their restaurant it's well worth the effort to walk up there.

Avoid the motorway - it's tolled and just another boring motorway. Use the N125 coast road and you'll go through a few picturesque towns and villages.
Go up the mountains to Monchique. It's a decent steer up the mountain roads and there are plenty of quiet roads leading to it. I had great fun hammering our diesel Punto hire car up there.

I've been in Porto for 2 months now. This street "Calcada das virtudes" always has free parking spaces because you have to do a 3 point turn to get in and out. BUT it is only 500 metres from the famous Riberia water front. Oh that is free in the sense that you don't have to pay and there always spaces.
Hi,
I'm a regular vistor to Portgual - got back last week from a couple of weeks in the Algarve.
I would suggest keeping going West from Lagos to Sagres/Cape St Vincent - bleak and beautiful and some stunning beaches (Praia Beliche in particular. Be a shame to cut the corner off!
If you're in Lagos, fancy eating fish and want to avoid the tourist tax head to Tasca Da Lota - on the marina near the train station.
It is surrounded by commercial units and it's definitely not a high-end romantic spot, but it's my favourite place to eat fish in the Algarve - incredibly fresh fish at bargain prices.

Any places on there you would cross off and add on Paul?
In Vila do Conde in the harbour the are building repairing fishing boats basically on the beach/waterfront and you can wander among them using their Black & Decker tools. Some friends there invited us to their very old weekend house. Wow, 8 bedrooms, vineyard, cellar with 800 bottles, pool, own chapel where all the family had been baptized and married. Sorry not available to everyone The coast between Faro and Lagos is fairly touristy - not sure if that's what you're after. Doesn't really hit the spot for me.
We have a timeshare villa Quinta do Lago which is very comfortable but very golf-focussed and not very 'authentic'.
If you are looking to see a bit more of the 'real' Portugal I'd definitely recommend going slightly east of Faro and perhaps staying a night or two on Culantro - a fisherman's island - stunningly relaxing place! https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/239793?sug=51
