The car hire company in Italy that my daughter has chosen has a couple of things I need advice on .
The CDW and the Theft Waiver both have excesses that are considerable and for which they imprint my credit card prior to me driving the car.
Is there companies you can recommend where I can pay to have the excess removed .
Also I have an old style driving licence not a photo card,is that OK with my passport ?

I've used iCarHireInsurance.com before a few times. I've never had to claim so I couldn't tell you about that process but they are cheap and will cover pretty much any costs you might incur.

I've used insurance4carhire but never had to claim.

Bear in mind that the large hold on your card will still happen, and should the worst happen you will still have the sizeable excess taken from you.

Check to see if your coverage includes loss of use, as the rental companies often charge that when a vehicle has to be repaired and it's often excluded. In reality they'd have to be able to demonstrate their utilisation was sufficiently high over the repair period to justify the charge, but we're talking about Italy here biggrin

For complete peace of mind it's often best to take their insurance when you arrive at the counter, but it's also significantly more expensive.
