If we book a day return, it's considerably cheaper than a long term return. We don't know when we will be coming back, so won't use the return leg of the day return.

We would book a day return for for the return leg.

Has anyone been charged for not using the return leg of a eurotunnel journey?

I used to do this a lot, as the difference in fares is massive, and they never picked up on it.

Recently, however, the warnings about doing this have been more prominent on the Eurotunnel website - that they will add extra charges to your card (the cost of a standard single fare) if you fail to use the return portion, and I no longer risk it.

For longer trips I tend to use the ferry as the price differential between a day return and a longer trip is much smaller.

We have a 16 hour drive ahead of us, so use the tunnel to save time.

If you do it once or twice I dont see a issue but they are clamping down on it I believe. I how ever prefer to get the ferry get out the car some food and drink while streching my legs on the trips to europe. With the issues with Eurotunnel delays and things the ferry is cheaper and less hasstle. Ive beaten friends back into the UK and into Europe with the delays which really fecked them off

How can they add extra charges to your card when you haven't agreed to it ?

Probably on the basis you've agreed to go there and return using the tickets that were purchased. I imagine Eurotunnel have given this at least some thought.

Yup, it's in the T&C's, I've never done it myself but I have done the ferry one way and tunnel back using return bookings for the single journeys.

TBH, if you do it once or twice you will probably get away with it, but I do know that they sometimes do check for multiple bookings using the same card or vehicle and will charge you the actual cost if they think you were breaking the T&C's, I can confirm it's happened to a few people I know so you take your chances....
