I had a few days on the beach at Biarritz this year as usual when I was at my holiday house in the Dordogne , main difference from last year was the obvious presence of 4 armed soldiers escorted by a policeman around town and beaches , I'm not sure if it made me feel safer or more vulnerable !
There was also a heavy armed presence at the border both sides to cross to San Sebastián, sign of the times I suppose .

Might well be different in that part of the world, but in Paris the army has been patrolling the Metro since long before the threat of Islamic terrorism in France.

personally i'd rather they were there than not, but the issue with french security services is not feet on the street; it's intelligence, or lack thereof

Yeah, very common sight in Paris. A reassuring one too.
