Have booked a short city break to Vienna for Christmas (fly out on the 23rd back on the 26th) staying in the Hotel Topazz.

Any recommendations for restaurants or things we must see whilst there would be appreciated.

There will be 4 adults and a 14 year girl going

We were there in August and tried to pack in as much as possible, you're staying near the main shopping areas and most tourist stuff, our favourites were the Belvedere Palace- Klimt etc paintings, Cafe Central for cake and coffee/beer, Silberwirt Restaurant for Schnitzel (and more beer), Prater Amusement park for the big wheel and roller coasters (you could leave the 14 year old there with a load of Euros smile), Naschmarkt, which I expect will be lit up for xmas, riding the no. 1 tram around the Ringstrasse, walking through the parks, sausage stands (Käsekrainer are yum), central museums etc etc. Didn't get time to do the Opera house tour/see a performance but I've heard it's impressive.

Public transport is quick & easy, and you can get a 72hr city travel card for Euro 16.50.

There's a great cafe behind the Hotel Bristol, next to the Opera house, where you can get reasonably priced but excellent Sacher Torte - Gerstner KUK.
The sacher hotel is very snooty and packed with tourists most of the time.

I'd check opening times of museums et al.

If you have time and if history is your thing- take the simple train journey to the Schoenberg palace. It's HUGE 600+ rooms and good to explore. You can choose various lengths of tour depending on interest and time available.

Alternative idea - you can get a taxi to Budapest for the day - hotels can organise this. It's not that expensive and about 90 minutes each way - but as they are the two closest capital cities it's another fun thing to do. Another fantastic city even if you do a boat trip or wander around the upper Buda part of the city for the castle and views.
