Hoping to book a trip to oz end of next year for Christmas and new year plus a week or so either side, rough itinerary is Brisbane for a week or so before Melbourne on Boxing Day or day after for a few days to include a day at the cricket before going back up to Sydney on NYE.

Anybody been there for NYE before? Will be 3 adults (39-70) and an 11 year old lad. Plan is to maybe stay slightly out of the centre for a couple of cheaper nights before stating NYE itself as centrally as possible (budget permitting).

Trip advisor says it's pretty busy obviously but what chance settling down in one of the parks or viewing spots with a picnic ready for the fireworks display? Budget is reasonably modest without being shoestring, once in a lifetime job so working provisionally at around £1k for 3 nights or so given its going to be a once in a lifetime sort of thing and were hopefully staying with family for a good portion of the holiday so accommodation for the most part won't really be much.

Any advice welcome please.

Thanks

Mrs Macquarie's Point probably your best bet but you need to get there very early, like NYE morning. Bear in mind you'll be hanging around all day in likely serious heat.

There are plenty more places just google it, but the same note applies most places. Fireworks are 9pm and midnight, for 12 hours the city is totally rammed, max speed: shuffle.

It ain't cheap, but booking a spot on one of the many boats/yachts that head out into the harbour to watch the fireworks gives you a brilliant view with no hanging around (you usually board the boats at Darling Harbour) and not too big a crowd and often somewhere to sit.

Worth a google at least...

I lived in Dover Heights a suburb of Sydney and witnessed the 2000nye from a field behind our house. Great place to be

Thanks, actually been looking at this since posting. Beyond the wharfe website, early departure that takes in both the early and midnight fireworks, no booze (suits is down to the ground) take your own picnic for 399 dollars. Found a decent enough air bnb in the business district with 2 bedrooms for £800 ish that's within walking distance from the departure point. Wether I've got the balls to book on air bnb in case it gets cancelled remains to be seen.....

This site will give you the info you need. http://www.sydneynewyearseve.com/vantage-points/

There are hundreds of designated spots to see the fireworks all over the city, some are free and some are ticketed (generally around $20 each).

I would advise going for ticketed options as they are generally less crowded (for next year I would advise booking through the above site in October 2017 when tickets are generally released.

Just be mindful that getting around the city is a nightmare on NYE so plan accordingly.

we did it in 2011 stayed at the royal observatory hotel and watched the fireworks from alongside the opera house. Was free to get in everywhere but had to find a space at 10am and sit around in the heat for 14 hours until it all kicked off, still worth it though have great memories of it.

How about Air BnB a place with a balcony or roof terrace that overlooks the harbour? E.g. Potts Point.

Not looked at prices so this may be a non-starter financially.

The North Shore is a bit more family friendly although still packed. Blues Point, Milsons Point, Kurraba Point or Cremorne Point would be great. We used to go to Milsons Point which has a large park under the Bridge and is close to transport for us. It also gives some shade during the day.The trains will be rammed and the Bridge closed so try to find somewhere within walking distance.
