Unless it's changed recently Norwich and Southend allow you to drop off for free. I think they give you 10 mins in the short term car park free of charge.
yes Southend is 15 minutes free parking and it takes about a minute to walk to the terminal.
Nice little airport, just a bit of a pain to get to at busy times.

For years I have waited at the departures drop off area and been picked up there.

I know it is against the regulations for a driver to stop/park and they risk a ticket.

Last week I noticed there are new signs saying a £40 fine for waiting drivers.

Has anybody experienced a problem since these signs have been put up?

Is it still Ok to wait at the departures area, get in the car when it arrives and drive away?

I've been told there are cameras that detect cars driving into the drop area with only a driver who is then sent a fine. This sounds like a urban myth/pub story. Can anybody confirm?
Are you the passenger?

If so, have an arrangement with your driver that you will ring him when you (have got your luggage and) are now about to go outside on the departures level by the letter 'D'.

As he comes to a halt, you step forward (put your case in the boot) get in the car and he drives orf.

Takes all of 10 secs.

If you don't have luggage omit the part in parenthesis.

If you are the driver, not the passenger, then reverse the roles.

Small variations for the different terminals.

I did this for more than 20 years, only recently stopped driving and never had a ticket.

That probably won't work anymore if they have cameras.

Dropping off at Luton now incurs a £70? fine if you do it anywhere near the terminal building apart from the official drop off zone, all monitored by camera.

They often have a mobile camera Smart car at Stansted as well to catch people dropping off on the road alongside the car parks.

But I can confirm the fact they want everyone to use the short stay for money making purposes, rather than security, as otherwise they would do what several smaller airports do and offer 30 minutes free parking.
Are these other airports inside the M25?
How many people get collected at T5 every day...?

Apart from the private airport stuff - Biggin Hill, Farnborough, Oxford etc., 99% of my work was Heathrow or Gatwick. Rarely did I go to Luton or Stansted.

So, as I say, it used to work for me.

I wasn't saying it didn't wink we have all done it, but they are clamping down more now so you are less likely to get away with it in the future.

I'm a passenger.
I've used similar to your system. Given driver a time that I'm usually outside waiting so no need for him to wait in the drop off area. As you say takes about 10 secs.

Read on another forum that driver stopped, car has stop/start so engine stops, passenger gets in, warden straight on driver asking why he has turned off engine and tries to give a ticket. rolleyes

Con at T5 is sign that says "Passenger pick up". Strangers would think this goes to a pick up area but leads to car park, where you incur costs.
As has been posted by others just a money making scheme.

Robin Hood Airport has a camera van driving round its almost deserted roads all day. If it catches you stationary for a few seconds, you get a penalty notice in the post.

This is beyond absurd.

Having said that, it affords the opportunity to indulge in a bit of sport.

It's quite easy to manoeuvre yourself in front of the van by careful use of roundabouts, or even overtaking him while he's on his mobile phone, which he is, regularly.

Then you slow right down and chummy's brain light up, thinking you're going to stop and he's going to get another kill.

Then you reach a roundabout and do multiple laps of said roundabout. Chummy follows you on every lap and never seems to sus that you're taking the piss.

This can be extended at will by going to the next roundabout and repeating the exercise.

Endless fun...smile

I'll let you all know - as I picked up from the drop off area at T5 very recently and noticed the penalty No Waiting signs afterwards. I was stationary for c.20 seconds as my passenger was waiting for me after liaising via phone - so technically I wasn't waiting at all! Several cabs seemed to be hanging around there though for the very short time I was parked wink It's an airport ffs - why should you pay to pick up as you don't have to pay to drop off . . . yet! biggrin

I understand the security but the situation is outrageous.

I've been picking up from the drop-off zone at T5 since it opened. I made the mistake of choosing the pick up area once just to end up in the car park (pay). Picking up, I make sure my passenger is waiting for me to arrive, collect, ten seconds later drive off. I pick her up again tomorrow evening. Let's see...
