Hi all,

Currently trying to get this years holiday booked.

We've decided on Playa Blanca in Lanzarote, a resort we've visited before and liked. Previously, we stayed at the Holiday Village (Flamingo Beach if anyone knows the area), but for some reason it's now no longer a Holiday Village - and it looks like they've curtailed a lot of the all inclusive restaurant options etc. - so decided against returning there.

Our travel agent has suggested the H10 Rubicon Palace as a potential alternative. I remember passing it when we were in Playa Blanca last year, so I know where it is - I also remember it seemed quite large.

I know it's not very PH to book an all inclusive resort in the Canaries smile However, has anyone stayed at the H10 Rubicon Palace recently? I'm interested in what you get for your money if you opt to stay on an all inclusive basis (e.g. dining options etc.), and in general what it's like? We'd be staying in August - me, the Mrs and our 6 year old.

Thanks,

Steve.

It's a bit out of the way, I know someone who stayed there probably 5 years ago and they loved it, that was all inclusive but some time ago.

You have the Lanzarote Princess which I closer to the town centre, we are staying at the H10 White suites in Feb but only on a b&b basis. Breakfast is ok ..... Never eaten in the evening there though, we always eat out.

Yeah - last year when we stayed at the Holiday Village on Flamingo Beach, I went running past it on the way to the Pechiguera lighthouse most mornings - it is right at the westerly end of Playa Blanca, but with a 6 year old in tow, we're not likely to do a massive amount of exploring. He just wants to be in or near the pool all day - we want decent food and drink, and the occasional kids club break smile

We saw the Lanzarote Princess being built (or majorly refurbed) when we were in Playa Blanca last year - its certainly another option (everything is going to be fresh after the refurb).

Prices everywhere seem a fair bit more expensive than they were last year - so it's a tough one... Ideally we're looking for somewhere where we can eat a la carte occasionally (not a fan of buffets), and somewhere that doesn't feel too "football tops and tattoos". I'd probably have gone for a nice villa with a private pool, and eaten out every night. But the Mrs thinks our son needs other kids of his age around him to play with (and she's probably right), hence looking for a resort.

Have stayed at Rubicon on numerous occasions, its our fav Hotel on the Island and will be there Feb half term for 7 nights.

Its a family oriented Hotel, great Kids clubs and entertainment, with Baby sitting services available. Entertainment every night for the young ones in the Daisy club.

Various Pools to use and never very busy, Main pool area is Salt water, rest of the pools are fresh water.

We always do AI and works very well for our fussy kids, want an Ice Cream just get one. They have Various restaurants, Italian, American etc that you can book and use as part of your AI entitlement, but only once per restaurant.

Main Restaurant is Buffet, with an area were they tend to do Themed fresh cooked evenings too. Also have a kids Buffet with Chips, Burgers and the like.

Main Pool restaurant is open all day for snacks etc, Mini Burgers, Hot dogs, Pizza, Sandwiches , Salad, Beer,Cocktails, Ice Cream etc...

You also have the Piano bar to sit in the evenings with light entertainment, ie singing, piano, sax players etc.

Drinks as per normal on AI is not your usual branded stuff, but you can pay extra if you want it. I'm not a big drinker so doesn't bother me.

Things to do include, scuba diving, Crazy Golf, amusement arcade, table tennis etc..

Staff are very friendly and will do all they can for you.

If you do book, request a room that is not part of the main hotel if possible. We always book direct with Hotel as we have an H10 Club Card, gives us 5% plus they send you a 10% voucher when its your birthday, So we add that to our 5%.

Anything else you want to know let me know.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply. Our travel agent thought you only got 1 a la carte visit per stay with the AI package - but you're saying it's 1 visit to each restaurant per stay? (which would be much better)

No it's one restaurant per stay, but you can't go back to a restaurant you went to before and have to book them up in advance.
So if you prefer Italian food for example, save that for later in holiday as something to look forward to!

The Buffet is very good on its own, with lots of choice, but the a la Carte certainly is a better experience of course and the food is excellent.

We tend to hire a car direct and pick up from the Airport, we use http://www.cabreramedina.com/EN

We last went in August 2015, it was busy but because its "spread out" it didn't feel over crowded, particularly the pools. First time we have been in August, as we usually do May or October half terms.

We tend to use the quieter pools near the Scuba Diving centre, one is moon shape and the one below that as they are well away from the hub of entertainment that goes on near the main pool bar.

Childrens pool is good with a pirate ship with a slide and water cannons, can get very busy though.

The other option is a Princess a Yaiza, it has kikoland (something like that) which is pretty much a kids complex. The only thing is Yaiza is expensive, we stayed there last year and this year it's gone up again. You can book direct with H10 and get the 5% off but with it being payment in euros and brexit I'm not sure what's going to happen to the exchange rate.

We booked with travel republic rather than H10 as it was cheaper, car hire is courtesy of plus car.

Have you tried jet2 ? We are off to alcudia in September and the whole package was the same as what the hotel only was with most sites, ba.com holidays are very good value too and you get good luggage allowances.

Not stayed there, but have stayed at the H10 at Costa Tequise, Lanzarote, a couple of times in the last three years, excellent hotel, very clean and well run.

Great for kids....(Ours are all grown up)

Playa Blanca is very nice, the slight snag is, it is stuck right at the south of the island, but if you hire a car, no problem.

Thanks for all the information - I think we'll probably give the Rubicon a try. The package price my travel agent found (~ £3300 for 3 people on an AI basis, for 11 nights mid-August) is pretty competitive when you look at other 4* resorts in the Canaries - especially when you have to travel during the school holidays. Since its classed as First Choice Premier, you get stuff like extra luggage allowance etc. (we'll be flying Thomson, because we want to use our local airport).

Stayed at the Rubicon a few times. Try to get accommodation on the top floor in one of the small blocks of rooms around the grounds rather than in the main building - much quieter. The buildings were getting a bit shabby and scruffy last time we stayed and the evening entertainment was truly dire.

Food was sort of OK if you like bland and ordinary. Mostly buffet service in a dining room that can't cope when the hotel is full and a small short order counter usually with a long que. Food quality improves dramatically every time on the night the hotel does it's weekly guest satisfaction survey.

You're some way from the centre of Playa Blanca at the Rubicon and any beaches too. Lanzarote has some great scenery inland and lovely beaches at the Papagayo bays at the other end of the resort. Hire a car.

Stayed there in November 2015. Lovely hotel grounds. I did a full review on TripAdvisor but I don't suppose its allowed to link on here. The week before we were there they had heavy rain and some of the rooms in the blocks off the main foyer flooded apparently - but all was well when we were there. No wifi in the rooms, only in the main foyer. I think those paying extra for the VIP treatment got wifi in their rooms. The only niggle was the entertainments staff playing dance music from 10am every day - it boomed through most of the grounds. Neighbouring hotels were all quieter (we noticed as we walked past them). There was 1 smaller pool over past the shops and bar at the far end which the sound didn't reach, so that was quiet all day. But generally, forget a quiet lazy day by the pool.

Food wise - cooked breakfasts generally not very good, evening meals better but variable. Lunches were ok. Had better buffet food at other all inclusives. The a la carte meals were excellent (Italian and Asian, we went for). Grounds (which are extremely large) and hotel very decent though - rooms were a good size too. Check in was woefully slow I remember - understaffed on reception (seems more common lately). Bar service a bit slow sometimes but plenty of seating.

It's ok up that end, although Lanis own most of that end smile

Francos up by the papagayo shopping centre have very nice pizzas (next to Burger King) and the burgers in the ice house ( down the right hand side of the shopping centre) are also good.
