The cost increase in recent years has nothing to do with Brexit and everything to do with exchange rates and fuel costs.
?

Brexit explains the exchange rate and the fuel costs.
Exchange rate fuctuations and rising fuel costs are not recent phenomenon. For exampple, more expensive, low sulphur fuel was necessary from January 2015 and pushed up ferry fares quite a lot overnight. I think it was in the order of £40-50 on cross channel ferries, more on longer routes.

Too right, was looking at options for a trip to western ireland and fancied our steed over some insipid hire car... £400+ for the ferry makes no sense though, when flights are £60 and a weeks car hire about £100.

Must have been cheap years ago as we went as a family and we was cheap.

Cheap flights are what killed the ferry business. Ferries haven't really gone up much, it's just that the alternatives came down a lot.
