Going to Dubai in July this year for 10 days, staying at Le Royal Meridien JBR, any tips or ideas for things to do whilst there?

You'll be bored to tears after a couple days of climbing the big tower and going to the mall. Need to get inventive.

Go offroading in the desert.
Visit Dolphin Bay and swim with dolphins.
Ski in the snowdome.
Rent a Veyron, Lambo or Ferrari for a day or two and explore the area.

It will be scorchio that time of year.

The hottest month. A wet rag would decline a holiday there at that time of year.
On the plus side, the A/C is very good in the hotels, malls and the like.

Dubai is pretty crap at any time of the year to be honest. July just adds vast amounts of extra heat and humidity to the misery.

I got drunk at Pier 7 with my dad a few weeks ago, £10/pint peroni. Hunt down happy hours, there are loads of bars around the JBR.

I'm sorry to say but it will be very very hot 40+ every day and staying hot into the evening making dining outside quite uncomfortable.

Skydive Dubai is near the JBR if you fancy that.

I found 2 nights was enough for me. In September it was ball sweatingly hot, and 5 mins outside would result in perspiration overload.

However, as previously mentioned, the air con was very good, the taxis were relatively cheap, the drinks weren't. I stayed in the middle of town, so can't tell you about the beaches.

Afternoon tea at the Khalifa was very nice, but not at all cheap, and the mall is alright if you like shopping.

4 wheel drive in the evening out into the desert is good to see the sunset. Gold market is worth a wander round though they prefer more yellow gold than usually seen in the UK if that makes sense. There are plenty of good restaurants to go to but it will be scorchio every day as everyone has said.

As others have said, July really isn't the best time to be visiting Dubai. I often see 50 degrees C plus displayed in the car during summer, it rarely drops below the high 30s at night, it can be humid and the sea will be like a hot bath. Most of the hotels will chill their pools to make them usable ... but you'll probably burn the soles of your feet walking from the shade to the edge of the pool!

If you really are committed, then I'd recommend:
1.) Visit "At The Top" which is the viewing platform on, I think, the 121st floor of the Burj Khalifa (but be aware that summer can be very hazy and the views could be very poor). Book in advance on their website to get the cheapest rates. The entrance for this is in the Dubai Mall so make a day of it, do some shopping (horribly expensive compared to the UK), and then find a restaurant where you can sit inside but watch the fountain displays outside. There's also an ice rink and a Sega Republic in the mall.
2.) Afternoon tea at the Burj Al Arab. Horribly expensive (a recurring theme here) but a must do just to take in the "unusual" decor of the place. It's difficult to get inside without a reservation for something.
3.) Dune bashing. Plenty of organised trips where you do the dune bashing, watch the sunset (or lack of during summer as the sun just disappears into the haze) in the desert and then go to a camp for BBQ, belly dancing etc (but the heat may make this uncomfortable.
4.) Waterparks. 2 very good ones, Wild Wadi and Aquaventure. My recommendation would be Wild Wadi and it might just be bearable if you wait until the sun has set.
5.) Golf. Some fantastic courses and, if you tee off at sunrise you may get 9 holes in before you die of heat exhaustion. I've taken folks out at 7am before and they've looked like they have showered in their clothes by the time we've finished. Factor 50 and gallons of Isostar/Gatorade/etc required if you risk this.
6.) Someone mentioned hiring a super car ... if you do this then head out of town for Jebel Jais (make sure you know where you are going before you set off), it's probably the most PH road and will be empty in July.
7.) Theme parks. A load have opened up recently, I've not visited any of them yet so you'll need to google them if that's your thing.
8.) Karting. Try the Dubai Autodrome where they have both indoor and outdoor. The outdoor track is great, floodlit and probably just about bearable after the sun has set.

Abu Dhabi is only an hour away by car, the Yas circuit offers various PH type experiences, Ferrari world isn't worth the entrance fee (imho). The Sheik Zayed Grand mosque is definitely worth a look if you do head that way.

Hope this helps.

Whatever you do don't take a dip in the sea to cool down. It's like getting into a very warm bath.

I've been a couple of times as I had family living there. Now they are back in UK, I'll live happy knowing I'm not going to Dubai.

I could just never really see what people thought was so good about the place. But then I don't really like shopping and I'm not massively impressed with overt displays of personal wealth, so probably just not a place for me.
The whole place just seemed like some sort of weird Disneyland for the easily impressed.

Fair point, the OP asked for ideas not general opinions on the place.

OP,

Dubai is very different from most places and from this thread obviously not to everyone's taste.

I've been twice, both for 10 day so. Once in July and once in September - loved it both times. July is hot but still possible to sunbathe as long as you're careful. The Royal Meridian is a great hotel, stayed there the first time and wished we'd gone back there the second time. Only downside is that we met Peter Andre there, thankfully no one caught us speaking to him.

It's all quite spectacular and amazing how quickly it's been built up. I wouldn't worry about all the negative viewpoints, you'll probably love it.

I'm Scottish and can burn just looking at last minute.com - survived Dubai though!

Have a great time

Dress your missus in short shorts and give her the odd kiss in a nice public place.

Should liven up your week.

July? You're keen.

Hot, so stay away from the canals and the fountain, the humidity will be unbearable.

As an activity, go to a travel agent and change your stay to 2 days .

What a ball achingly dull place to visit.

He's either a close friend or that's one of the most assumptive statements I've seen in this section of PH
Oh well.. At least you're honest about your occupation. I'm presumptively sure you're good at it.
