day travel passes
Just use you're contactless cards. You'll get the cheapest fares, capped at the cost of a days travel pass. The kids will be free anyway. You only need to buy tickets for the thames clipper.
Really? Forgive the ignorance, but that sounds brilliant. So just use our bank cards, no need to buy a ticket, and it'll cap at £12 a day (or whatever it is)?

Cap is £6.60 - yep, half the cost of a travel card!!

Edit - for Zones 1&2 it's £6.60

So £13.20 for the two of us (as kids are free if I've heard right) and it just comes straight off our cards without having to buy a ticket?

It is brilliant, but you won't be able to get the two for one offers on attractions, so figure out if that's an issue first.

You won't even need to buy advance tickets for the Clipper for you and your other half, as you get the same discounted price on there with Contactless cards, but you will need to get a ticket for that for your little one, but you can do that in advance on their app.

If you're coming in from Twickenham, that's Zone 6, so just tap in and out on the yellow card readers, and no matter how many trains, buses or tubes you get in the day, you'll be capped at £11 per adult. Thames Clipper isn't included in that cap, but you can still pay for it with contactless.

Buy a Family & Friends railcard, costs £30 tops.

Just done a quick check, 7.30 train from Castle Cary to Paddington & returning on the 17:00 comes out at £93 for 2 adult and 2 child.
Great shout, thank you. I've just checked and, subject to buying a railcard, suitable trains for our journey come in at £82. This is what we'll do I think.

Age 5-10 travel for free with a paying adult. We just tapped in & out with our contactless debit cards, over the three days we paid £6.60/£4.80/£6.60 on each day per adult.

With a small person, just head for the accessible barrier at the tube stations and tap your card. When the barriers open child & adult just walk through.

Tip (another one) - you can buy the tickets and railcard today online. You don't need to have the railcard in your hand to purchase the ticket, just make sure you have it with you when you travel.

Just in case you ditch this plan and go back to driving up to Twickenham then you may want to avoid the area if the 6 Nations are playing that Saturday you have in mind.

Ah, was that what it was. I knew we had to buy something in advance.

Do I remember rightly that the Clipper isn't included in the max daily cap as well? So it will be up to £6.60 plus whatever your Clipper fare is for the day? Either way, it's still a lot cheaper than the tourist trip boats.

Correct, it's not included in the cap, but also way cheaper than the other boats, and better too when they hit the gas! biggrin

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

The plan is to head up in the car and then get the train in from Twickenham...will this still qualify for the 2-for-1 offers?
You qualify for the 2 for 1 providing you use a 'proper' train, with an orange ticket, into London.
