Ok I have a new jet wash, are all the detergents much the same or are there some you'd recommend for getting the grime off the car?

Have a look for snow foams. They go into a little bottle that attaches to the end of the lance and coats the car in thick foam. You leave it to dwell, it'll take a load of the grime off, sponge and then rinse.

Assume you mean a pressure washer ?

If the car is very dirty you can get stuff called "traffic film remover". Some of it is very harsh and will strip any way/polish etc you have on the car. Others are somewhat more gentle but will still clean the car well. There are loads of these, but I saw Koch Chemie Greenstar got a good write up here: http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.p...
Bilt Hamber Surfex gets a good write up too.

The other thing to look at is using snow foam. You buy a lance to fit your pressure washer and fill it with snow foam and cover the car. The idea is that the foam lifts off the dirt and holds it in suspension. when you wash it off all the dirt comes off, so by the time you take to it with a washmitt (no sponges please!) much of the dirt has already gone.
DodoJuice just started selling lances for £20, others are around the same price. There are loads of snow foams out there, so pick one and try it - again Bilt Hamber stuff seems to be well regarded.

I don't have a pressure washer (yet) - has anyone tried snowfoam with a lance for a standard hosepipe (snow cannon or demon snow foam)?

A lance won't work on a hosepipe. You can get pump sprayers normally used for gardening, like this

it won't replace a pressure washer / foam lance but it makes using a TFR / pre wash a bit easier.

Is this the demon shine thing you mean? http://www.halfords.com/motoring/car-cleaning/sham... never used one but I guess it could be worth a go.

Worth getting a pressure washer though, search for nilfisk / karcher outlets that sell refurbished units with warranty if you don't want to spend too much.

Sorry yes pressure washer, looking to get grime of the cars and van, don't think they have any wax to take off.
I'd never even heard of snow foams before!
I'll get some traffic film remover.
Thanks.

No! Foam, dwell, rinse! Then contact wash. Without a sponge.

Some TFRs will remove wax, so don't go mad with the strength of it !

karcher foam gun is pants, you have to have it set to max to get a nearly decent foam and it then spanks the foam in one cars worth, i'll be getting a new lance soon. there is my 10p worth.

That demon shine thing is awful. A friend also went for demon shine for his snow foam lance instead of bilt hamber that was also a mistake.

I've had poor luck with snow foam lances. The first (£30+) had the head fall off because the glue holding it together fell apart after a couple of uses. Yes, I made sure to close the valve and rinse through with fresh water after each use. The second (also £30+ from somewhere else) worked fine for a couple of months, until I left some BH snow foam in it for a few hours and found it all leaking out of the top between the joins. I've given up and just use Power Maxed TFR in a cheap garden sprayer now. Not as visually impacting, but it eats through the grime and rinses 99% clean after a few minutes (1:15 dilution). No mess, easier to handle, just as cheap (5 litres of concentrate for £14 delivered), and I don't have to keep mucking about with lances. It's also wax and LSP safe (at 1:9 and weaker).
