Afternoon all,
Looking for some recommendations of where to go/things to do in Thailand.

We're going in May this year and will fly from London to Bangkok, and hope to spend a night or 2 in Bangkok - anyone recommend what to do?

We have a wedding in Khanom 7 days later, so we're planning on one of the islands for relaxation, luxury and snorkelling/scuba. Initial thoughts were Koh Samui, as we can get a ferry to the mainland, and the weather should be good in May, compared to the likes of Krabbi.
Any recommendations other than Koh Samui?

Appreciate your thoughts.

I couldn't go all that way for 2 nights in Bangkok. Some say you can do Bangkok in that time but I disagree.
Hotel Muse on Lang Suan is good as are many others but Muse gets my vote.

Go to Samui, I tend to prefer it. Quite a few old threads on this should provide inspiration too. Book internal flights with Bangkok Airways, great little airline

Do the evening river cruise with dinner and bar & dancing - great way to see parts of Bangkok whilst having a great time.

The floating market excursion is also very very interesting.

We did 8 nights in Thailand last April.

First 3 was in Bangkok, stayed at the Banyan Tree which was amazing - but to be honest, we was pretty bored by the third day.

Cheers all,
We were thinking the same around Bangkok as it's just another city I guess?
We're staying at the Intercontinental but not sure where to fly to afterwards! So many options...
Koh Samui is still winning but some friends will be diving at Koh Tao so may join them for a day or two.

We're just looking for relaxation and beautiful scenery/beaches. Any other alternatives?
I'll do a search for previous threads in the meantime.

Thanks in advance

Koh Samet was good, relatively undeveloped when we went a few years ago, taxi's are pickup trucks where you sit on/in the back.

The resorts/accommodation are basic compared with Koh Samui and good because of that.

We went to a wedding on Mun Nork then transferred by speedboat to Koh Samet, it was pretty cool arriving at a beach by speedboat and being met by the resort manager on the beach.

We stayed here Paradee

Not expensive. Friends stayed at the other end of the island in even cheaper accommodation.

The beauty of Koh Samet is that it is a sort of national park and is protected from development.

Ao Nang in Krabi is nice. As is Railay just round the corner with a 10 minute boat ride. Theres no vehicles there.

Ah Nang and Railay get worse by the months. more like Blackpool and Patong. I rode up there 3 weeks ago again. the further South and Eat you go frpm Krabbie the further back in development time you go, Koh Lanta is getting better more developed some nice resorts on the East Coast. Further south is still bamboo roofed huts and difficult to book, have alook at Koh Lanta.

Thats a shame about Ao Nang, I havent been back there for about 4 years.
Some friends stayed on Koh Lipe a few years ago and said its lovely there but not a lot to do.

20 years ago Ray Lay was fantastic, single story buildings only, now it is all concrete. the old path from east to west runs around the hotels. Two weeks ago Princes Cave Bay was packed and they had ropes in the water to keep the speed boats out. My daughter went last year and said she would never go back as it was nothing like the place she remembers from her childhood. Ah Nang is full of tourists and tailors, Go south and east from Krabbie and each Km takes you back to what Thailand was.
I am lucky as I can drive up or take the bike, and explore, but it is not easy to travel unless you hire a car and driving in Thailand needs care,
Koh Lanta is a good compromise as it is easy to get to from Krqbbie airport

I really liked Koh Tao so would recommend a few days there, it is tiny so hire a moped and you will see all the different beaches etc in 2 days. At night the main beach area is lively with plenty of bars without being too full on. Although apart from diving, partying and chilling there is nothing else to do Samui is a much better option in that sense

I would also strongly recommend atleast 2 nights in Bangkok, IMO it is a crazy and lively city well worth a visit and skipping Bangkok means you probably have quite a journey ahead of you still (1 hour flight and 4 hour ferry ride in my case)

Totally agree with this, we did 2 night at either end of the holiday in BK. Rooftop bar 64 floors up on the Banyan tree hotel was worthwhile at sunset (no doubt there are other taller ones now)

Thoughts for your trip to Thailand.............

Bangkok.
Take the BTS to Saphan taksin and hire a long tail on the river. Choose one with a big engine on the back and keep throwing 20 baht notes at the driver! these things can pick up some speed. touring around the klongs off the main river can be super interesting.
Use the BTS Skyrail. Its simple to navigate, clean, safe and cheap. Just travel around and jump off, when you see something interesting to look at.
If you are there over a weekend, head up to Chatachak for the market. it's huge and sells EVERYTHING!
Khao san Road for cheap bars and eats in the backpacker area of town.
The Railway restaurant, near the ambassador hotel on Sukhumvit, for some decent Thai food, in a lovely garden just off the madness of Sukhumvit. Often live jazz and big screen football in the garden too, if you're into either.
Patpong, Soi Cowboy and Nana for the typical Bangkok Gogo bar experience. Actually, a couple of good bars on the way into Patpong, often with live bands.
Loads of good restaurants to suit all budgets. If you fancy a blow out, the riverside hotels do great Sunday brunches. Some have ferries from Saphan Taksin.

Islands.
If you head to Samui and have sufficient time, consider taking the train. Overnight sleeper from Bangkok and then coach/ferry to Nathon. Dirt cheap, when compared to the Bangkok Airways ticket, which will be near £200 return, per person.
So much to offer on Samui, so if you want to know more, PM me.
Ko Chang is good. Less developed than Phuket and Samui. However, Phuket and Samui can be whatever you want them to be. Don't be fooled into thinking that they are "ruined" by tourism; there are still amazing places with lots to offer, if you are prepared to do a little research and plan.

Might take you up on that offer - thanks very much for your thoughts, certainly something for us to consider.

I don't know how anyone could describe Bangkok as "any other city".

Looks really nice but I wouldn't mind your wages if you think that is cheap! I picked a random day, Sunday 9th April, and looked for a room for 2 adults. Cheapest room was £533 per night and most expensive room was £1691 per night.

I'm suddenly feeling very poor.
