We stayed here Paradee

Not expensive. Friends stayed at the other end of the island in even cheaper accommodation.
Looks really nice but I wouldn't mind your wages if you think that is cheap! I picked a random day, Sunday 9th April, and looked for a room for 2 adults. Cheapest room was £533 per night and most expensive room was £1691 per night.

I'm suddenly feeling very poor.
I paid £80 a night
Does sound a bit more 'real world' affordable smile

50 miles N of Bangkok is what's left of the old capital, Ayutthaya. The most amazing place we've ever been, and makes me smile just thinking about it.

We hired a mini-bus to take us there (dirt cheap, though you get a train). Just look for it in google images.

I don't know how anyone could describe Bangkok as "any other city".
Same-same.
But different.

My wife and I went to Phuket 30 years ago, stayed just outside Patong Beach in the Meridien. Patong Beach at that time was single row of bars and restaurants that stretched for about 1000m along the beach front, there was nothing else there, it was fantastic, met locals, got to know bar owners and the girls that worked in them without being just another punter.

We went back 14 years ago but this time stayed Karon Beach and Au Nang, visited Patong and it was aweful, as per other threads completely ruined, a horrible place. Au Nang on the other hand was just like Patong when we were ther 16 years previous.

Sounds like Au Nang is completely ruined as well now.

Still love Thailand, best place ever for a holiday.

If you've never been to a similar country then 2 days won't be enough. Just pick up a guidebook and pick any of the places you fancy as there will be too much to see and do in 2 days. For a night outing try one of the main kickboxing venues. Not many women there and even fewer tourists but lots of gambling and noise.

This.

Great hotel, be sure to dine on the roof top restaurant.

Only stayed in Bangkok for 2 nights then went exploring.

Thanks, that's great to know about the Banyan Tree - have our wedding anniversary whilst out there so may treat the Mrs to a night there.

Anyone been to the Intercontinental in Bangkok or Koh Samui?
I have a million IHG points to use, so thinking of staying in their properties, for other days, and explore around for food and drinks.

Been Samui and phangan, both nice would recommend.

Last year we went to Koh Lipe though which was very nice, fantastic beaches. It's tiny though and a long way away from samui (we went there from Langkawi, Malaysia)

Another vote for Koh Samui here.

We did Thailand in 2014 and it was amongst the best holidays I have ever had.

We did 3 nights in Bangkok, followed by 8 nights on Samui, and then 2 further nights in Bangkok. Whilst in Bangkok we went to the Chatuchak "weekend market" which was incredible, we visited Jim Thompson's House, we wandered around the shopping malls and saw the incredible diversity between the "Paragon" shopping mall which had a Rolls Royce dealership on the top floor, and the MBK Centre which sells knock off versions of everything. I also took the time to visit a reputable tailor, Nickermans, and have a couple of suits made for me but it did help that we had enough time to get measured and first fit, and then a week later came back to pick them up once the final fit was ready. We stayed at the Siam@Siam hotel, and I would recommend it certainly - it has a lovely rooftop bar, a rooftop swimming pool, as well as a decent restaurant.

On Samui, we stayed at the Ibis. Cheap for an 8 night stay, it was around £200 for us both for that time on a room only basis with a sea view room. Although the hotel had a great swimming pool, the fact it was right on the beach and had its own private area, meant we spent our whole time there. A couple of day trips that we did - one was an Island tour, where they drive you around in a Hilux with seats in the back and show you everything (but do NOT go for the "elephant ride" as the animals are so poorly treated)
The other was a day excursion to the Angthong National Marine Park. a boat trip out, followed by some sea kayaking around the stunning islands, with some snorkelling available and the chance to visit some impressive lagoons. All for around £25 each!

+1 for Siam@Siam.
If you go for the slightly pricier rooms, they do a rooftop drinks session every night, which is FOC.

I couldn't go all that way for 2 nights in Bangkok. Some say you can do Bangkok in that time but I disagree.
Hotel Muse on Lang Suan is good as are many others but Muse gets my vote.
+1 i stayed at hotel muse and it was great!

the executive rooms or whatever they are called get a 1 hour happy hour in the small bar downstairs everyday too (free drinks and nibbles)
