Taking the family there and staying in Sliema for a week in Aug.

So what can you suggest.
I did a quadbiking tour of Gozo, which was awesome. You get to see some bits of the place you can't get to by car (and wouldn't walk to), as well as it being quite fun (rwd quadbike+practically slick tyres+ water from the sea at a couple of fords = very fun)

edited to add, these guys: http://www.gozoquadhire.com/
looks fun indeed

To revive a fairly old thread - can I ask what was meant by being careful when hiring a car? I'm thinking of going with the OH later this month and would look to rent a car for the week...

Do you have transfers booked from the airport to your hotel?

If not, probably better to hire at the airport, as you will save the cost of taxis two ways.

Stick to well known firms, Europcar, Hertz etc, but be careful, they can sting you with add ons with the insurance.

Driving is not a problem, they drive on the left, same as the UK, but speed cameras tend to be more prevalent every year.

Don't park within a few feet of a junction, you WILL get a ticket.

The Island is only about twenty odd miles end to end, so will not knock up a lot of mileage.

Try and avoid driving into Valletta, better getting a bus which drops you near the top of Republic street.....(The main shopping area)

The road surface is like glass - don't expect to be able to brake or corner. In the wet, don't get in the car.

The locals tend to have faith in <entity of choice> rather than in driving skill.

The (newish) Fortification Museum is worth a visit. It covers the different eras of Malta's 'ownership' from the ancient times upto WW2 and what fortifications were built and why (linked to the technology of the day they were defending against), so a good overview of the history of the Island and warfare in general.

It's in Valletta down by the ferry to/from Sliema.

Around the far side of Valletta harbour is a recently gentrified area where the larger motor yachts park up, there is a Maritime museum and a WW2 focussed museum with some tunnels to explore.
