Hi there,

I'm planning a trip to Sancerre next month and thinking of spending a night in the Champagne region on the way down. Does anyone have any good suggestions - be it hotels, chateauxs or roads? Any help much appreciated.

Thanks,
James

I would stay in either reims or epernay. Out in the sticks there is nice but dull.

A little further south but few yrs ago but we had a couple of nights in Troyes

Beautiful hotel, but restaurant and breakfast eye wateringly expensive so wandered into town to eat.

We've also stopped here http://www.etoges.com/ lovely relaxing place to rock up to after a long drive, but we found the restaurant a bit stuffy and "hushed"

Visited Epernay but was unimpressed, too busy, too much traffic, couldn't find any nice squares to eat in and wander around.

We've stayed here a couple of times, it's nothing special, but OK for a stop over.

Stayed in Epernay for 3 nights in August '15 and actually found it the complete opposite of PositronicRay. Yes the big champagne houses can be busy but thats to be expected but walking up the Avenue de Chamapagne it was pretty quiet. We stayed here:

Perfect as you walk down the street into town from the hotel. Checking out all the places you are going to try out on the way home. Then slowly walk back to the hotel over a good few hours and glasses of champagne.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think looking at those options Reims might be the best bet but Epernay also looks good. I'm even wondering if a b&b at one of the small growers/producers might be the best bet.

Keep them coming if you've got any more ideas.

Thanks,
James

Maybe I just got it wrong, (not unheard of) visiting for the day, disappointed I was.

We stayed here http://www.casteljeanson.fr/en/index.html a couple of years ago. Great place (and secure parking!) but the best part is they love to show you around their own Champagne house and cellars that are just up the road http://www.champagne-henri-goutorbe.com/en/liens.h... It's small compared to the well known brands but much more personal. On a Sunday morning there were just us 4 and a couple of Italian lads who had started up their own Prosecco outfit. We were shown round by the owner, tasted some, bought some! Near to Epernay and Reims too.

Can't help with hotels, we stayed in a Mercure that was cheap, but can certainly recommend visiting Pommery, one of the best tours around and very interesting with the Roman era caves
