As subject I haven't been abroad for years but have to go to Germany for a few days with work.

Seems simple enough on paper, get taken to airport, catch plane, get picked up other end, spend a few days at/around the venue, do the same trip in reverse.

But I haven't been through an airport since before 9/11 so I'm hopelessly out of touch with anything I may need to know around modern plane travel.

Main thing I'm aware of is common sense stuff like no sharp stuff or liquids in your carry-on and don't ask "Can I hold your gun officer?".

I'll have a read on the airline website as the info will all be out there but anything not so obvious would be good to know.

if youre taking carry on only luggage , the budget type airlines only have room for the first xx bags , so consider priority boarding to ensure a space for your case

or be prepared to snatch out any electronics /valuables and put in a carrier bag to keep with you incase they want you to put your case in the hold

Generally speaking, airport security has fallen into alignment with basic man travel rules.

- Anything that doesn't fit easily into the pockets of a standard blazer (Sports Utility Jacket), and without upsetting its fit is not required.

- backpacks are for children.

- bags with wheels are for s who think it makes them look like the company they work for holds any value in them.

- bags on shoulder straps are for people who insert household objects where they were never intended.

- FedEx is for sending your non travel items ahead to be waiting in your room.

- You do not need scissors or knives as adults who scrapbook are mental.

- Nor do you require vast quantities of cosmetics or toiletries. Cross dressers can survive a short haul flight without these as they are 'strong, independent women'.

And just to answer the big question you will have when you enter the airport: ' Yes, the fat, simple looking bloke with the lazy eyes is a security guard.'

Don't forget your passport.

Headphones as you will be spending 2 hours plus crammed into a tin box with 300 other members of the human race.

As above but I empty my pockets into my jacket then the whole lot is in the x ray. Be careful with watches, I once had one dropped on the floor at Dublin because the inspector couldn't be bothered finding a tray.

Woaaah.

I must admit I used to hate the wheelie bag brigade, until I had to start staying away for short periods of time. In order to save time I won't use checked in luggage (I still pay for it though, so I can select my seat on BA!). A wheelie bag is far easier around the airport than anything else.

I tend to pack light and carry it when walking around town though - I can't abide the noise it makes on a pavement!

It's more the fact that an IQ test ought to be required before someone can buy on as an awful lot of users struggle to work out when to use the wheely capability. biggrin

WordLens - read a local sign or other text through it and it translates on screen into English; just pay for the language(s) you need
