Inexpensive Hotel in Vegas

What's so grim? I thought it was decent in 2013.
I've not stayed there but I've frequented the public areas. It's old, tired, dirty and knackered and I find the Vegas starts to feel rapidly less safe from about that point on the strip North. I wouldn't stay there for free.As said before, Circus Circus is a sh!t-hole, and the Excalibur isn't far behind - dreadfully tacky. And avoid anything at/near the Freemont Street end of town. The Wynn/Encore are favourites...but you did say 'inexpensive'. The Vdara is near-as-dammit as good, better located and cheaper (usually).
Thing about Vegas is you do tend to get what you pay for. Apart from the Wynn/Encore and the Venetian, virtually all of the other Casinos are owned by just 2 companies - MGM and Caesars - and so the casinos and room rates in the different casinos is pretty carefully pitched at different price brackets for varying quality/views/locations. If a room in hotel A is cheaper than hotel B, then with a few exceptions it isn't going to be as good in every respect. It's rare to get a proper 'bargain' there with a good hotel/room being much cheaper than a less good hotel/room for the same time period. You gets what you pay for...or not, as the case may be.

Pretty much the only place that bucks the 'you get what you pay for' rule is Caesars Palace as due to it being the most well known resort charges a premium for the quality of the room.
A good tip for getting value for money on a Vegas trip, especially if visiting for a week or more as most European visitors are, is to stay at a fancy hotel during the week when rates are lower and move to somewhere cheaper (eg. Downtown) for the weekend (Friday/Saturday) nights.

We stayed at the Luxor for $45 a night including tax.
Admittedly I'm not sure how we got it that cheap as it always seems a lot more expensive when I check now. We also got upgraded (although I'm sure that happens more often than not).
Forget what we paid there but it was as cheap or cheaper than the normal holiday inn type things we'd been staying in on our road trip. Worth it just for the MC-Escher type view from inside Admittedly I'm not sure how we got it that cheap as it always seems a lot more expensive when I check now. We also got upgraded (although I'm sure that happens more often than not).

We stayed at the MGM grand for a couple of nights in September 2014. Pre booked as part of a driving holiday and cost something like $30 per night, maybe less. Second biggest hotel in the world, the corridors are so long you can hardly se the end.
We stayed there some years ago when it was the biggest hotel in the world. I remember noting that it also had the longest lines at check-in and the longest walk to your room in the world too.JWH said:

I stayed in Circus Circus for a night a few years a go and it was tacky and knackered in the public areas but the room it's self was decent enough. We paid peanuts for it, had a great time. Didn't spend any time in the hotel really although we did nurse hangovers by the pool for a forenoon before getting out of there.gregs656 said:

When you guys are saying non smoking. Is the USA not like the UK with smoking areas? Im heading there in july for a 3-4 days part of a driving holiday.
The rooms in the larger hotels will all be non smoking, as are the communal areas (lobby/lifts/corridors/etc) but you can smoke on the gambling floors, even whilst sitting at the game tables, although some casinos have the odd none smoking table here or there. mickytruelove said:

The Vdara is completely smoke free but most hotels the casino floor is smoking and most of the bars will be too. It's one of the reasons why I prefer the Vdara to the Ariamikef said:
Every hotel has tons of parking. For cheap on the strip, look at Circus Circus. Not the most salubrious digs but not expensive either.
I was forced to stay ther when out on deployment when the Tri-star went 'u/s'. Biggest dump in the world. You have to wipe your feet on the way out. All he rooms the sqn were allocated stank of smoke and the Devore was still in the 70s. We normally used a place called the ameri hotel or ameri suites just opposite the hand rock cafe. Quite cheap, nice bar and inclusive breakfast and 5 minutes walk off the strip so a little bit quieter though. More aimed at business than tourists though.

Anyone had experiences of the Mardis Gras?
As a veteran of numerous Vegas trips and somewhat familiar with the pros and cons of pretty much every tourist hotel in town I'd not even heard of it, so had to look on Google maps. Unless you were going to be spending every waking hour at the Convention Center then I'd not even consider it. It would be like staying in a random motel in Anytown USA not a 'Vegas Experience' in any way, plus it is Ghetto Adjacent (the area between the north Strip and Maryland Parkway (where the Boulevard Mall is) is one of the worst in town - it's where all the down and out transients who come to the city for a Last Chance live. If that's your budget (and there is nothing wrong with that) then stay a one of the cheaper rooms Downtown (eg. Golden Gate, El Cortez).
