Day Road Trip suggestions frorm York

Hi all,

Just joined up the forum, been looking around for a few days now and seen some great suggesting of road trips.

My wife and I love road trips and we were wondering if you could give me some suggestions on Day trips drives from York please. I have driven the NC 500 acouple of times and am used to country roads around yorkshire and dales, so I am happy with single tracks. We love to explore the unseen treasures.

Get yourself a decent local map, as long as you avoid the A64 road to Scarborough there’s plenty of good roads over the Yorkshire Wolds to the east coast, North Yorkshire Moors and west to the Dales.
Have a look at the NY500 Pickering and The Motorist Sherburn for a couple of local motor themed cafes.

I live in Thirsk - between Moors and Dales and although the Dales get a good press the reality is the roads are often not great and can be busy . The best serious driving roads for me are the north Pennines and Middleton in Teesdale - Alston is as good anywhere to start with .But a long drive from York ..

Closer are the well known North York Moors roads so beloved of car journalists- the Blakey Ridge road and 'the Yorkshire TT- - B1257 Stokesley to Helmsley . If you do the latter, diversions to Hawnby and Rievaulx are delightful for a cuppa.

But my preference is the network of roads from the Howardian Hills ( Byland Abbey - Ampleforth - Hovingham - Castle Howard )and then just wander the forgotten routes south of Malton on the Wolds . Amble to villages like Leavening , Birdsall, Wharram Percy , Wetwang on minor roads and B1248 and B1251 ,and you can enjoy a Yorkshire few know about .

Just to clarify, I should have said Sherburn in Elmet for The Motorist location.( a few miles south of Tadcaster) There’s also a Sherburn village on the A64 between York and Scarborough.

To be honest provided you don't head towards Leeds then it all good once you turn off the main trunk roads. Switch the satnav off and just see where the little road go, you can switch it back on again when you want to go home.
But if you want a destination I would say the old medieval village of Wharram Percy is worth a visit.

Drive to Hawes (in Wensleydale - visit the creamery whilst there), then take the Buttertubs Pass to Tan Hill Inn (highest Inn in England), there are some great road around there when you have had enough you can end up on the A66, back to the A1 at Scotch Corner and York.

I would head east, to the coast.

A peak times, such as week ends and bank holidays, the A64 and the A171 can be too busy. But if you get off the beaten track and head north of Scarborough to Robin Hood's Bay, Whitby, Staithes or Runswick Bay you can find some really nice places.
