Hi folks

Next month my wife and I will be going to Hua Hin from Bangkok. I’ve ruled out hiring a car, also hotel shuttles which are a ridiculous £250 each way.

Latest thinking is a random company who will do it in a Corolla or similar for £50, or a train. Any advise?

Thanks!

I would get the train, will take about 4 hours and they are basic/fairly slow but will be the most scenic route and the most relaxing. My parents did this to Kanchanaburi and they loved it. Think it cost about £5 each way.
Or you can pay more and get a shares cabin with air con

Buses are fine, slightly more expensive but boring.

Defo try grab but I think your only issue is getting someone to actually accept the ride as its 200km each way.

I think if it was me I would be speaking to security at your hotel / condo and see if they can suggest someone.

Also I have used this company www.limousine.in.th and they were very good (despite the mixed reviews).
But I don't think you will get much change out of £100 each way. (maybe more I am not sure tbh)

Used to have a house in HH and would always hire a car and drive it, its very straight forward.

I have also used private shuttle services provided by Mr Roong (via TripAdvisor), he used to charge 2k then 3k BHT ... he then built a proper business from it: https://www.thaihappytaxi.com/WebPage/Rates.aspx

Still looks to be about 2k BHT each way per vehicle, so not too bad, very little inflation! smile

I can highly recommend
www.tommytaxibangkok.com

We base ourselves in Bangkok every year for a couple of months and have travelled all over with this company. A 4 hour drive this year to Ko Chang was about £90.00. They are always reliable and efficient, and the price is pre agreed.

Having said that I also love travelling by train, and its a bit more of an adventure, but obviously not quite as easy.
Have fun.
Simon.

I love the train in Thailand.
15:10 from the new KTW station in Bangkok, arrives in Hua Hin at 18:44.
3rd class, windows open, breeze on your face, great scenery, food sellers, the ability to walk around and stretch your legs, hang off the side of the train if you want. You can’t beat it.
2nd class is aircon with dirty windows and nowhere to move. Misses out all of the enjoyable bits of getting the train for me.

A car will be door to door, so much quicker, but that train journey is great. A taxi ride is just time waiting to arrive, the train is an enjoyable activity.

If you do decide on a taxi, every taxi I’ve flagged down to take me to the station in Bangkok or Hua Hin has tried to convince me to let them take me all the way, I don’t think you’ll have any trouble finding someone.

If you’re heading straight from/to Suvarnabhumi airport then there’s a great coach that does the trip which is much more comfortable than a taxi.

Me and the wife did this in 2017, it was a few £ and was an absolutely amazing way to see the countryside.

I've done this journey by coach, can't remember the exact price, but very cheap - around a fiver. It was comfy and had decent air con.

Thank you for the excellent advice everyone! Thinking train for Bangkok downtown to HH then maybe a taxi or bus back to the airport.

Is Grab just a local Uber?

We're off to Thailand in June: Bangkok, Chang Mai and Krabi (flights all booked, just curious).

Grab is like uber on crack.

I could get an ice cream at 830pm on a Tuesday in under 15 minutes straight to my door.

Damn, I miss the dairy queen double blizzard deal.

We did first class overnight bkk to suratthani.

Once we’d removed the cockroaches, it was great!

Wouldn’t have wanted to overnight in 3rd but do totally get how on a shorter run it’d be great. Went through loads of litttle villages, windy narrow track through jungle, etc etc.

Enjoy Thailand, it’s a truly magical place!

As above really - if you're already in the city, the train is a good option.

There's also a bus direct from the airport to Hua HIn, Then minivan to your hotel for another 100thb each.

edit - Get Grab set up on your phone ahead of time, then a local data sim once you're there. The hotel iin Chang Mai we stay at used to have a few different tuktuk\taxi drivers they would call if you wanted transport - now it's "just use Grab", it's cheaper than the taxis and no tourist pricing.

Re the sim if you can survive the first few hours without data then don't get one at the airport. 711 sell a 4G 30 day data sim card for not much more than about a fiver.

You will need your passport to register (the staff do it all for you).

DTAC is the network.
