Re the sim if you can survive the first few hours without data then don't get one at the airport. 711 sell a 4G 30 day data sim card for not much more than about a fiver.

You will need your passport to register (the staff do it all for you).

DTAC is the network.
Aye. 711 - the one to look out for at the moment is "True" 200 Baht (£4.30). 30 days, unlimited data, capped(slowed) after 30Gb . Never even got close last time, bearing in mind how widely avaiable wifi is for the really big stuff like movies etc.

https://www.true.th/truemoveh/sitenews/detail/1710...

The Airport, and. most AIS shops will try their best to steer you to a 800-1200 Thb "Tourist package" - same thing, just totally unlimited, but, like I said, if you can consume 30Gb in 30 days whilst on holiday, and with free wifi everywhere (inc ALL hotels), you probably need to get your face out of your phone ;-P - we read each day (news etc), download audiobooks, use google maps on the scooter, tether to laptops / tablets etc etc and never get close to being slowed down.

The girl in the 7-11 in Krabi town just told us to powere the phone off and on. That was it! (obv they have to , by law, copy your passport which is what I guess you are referring to)

The Thailand Tourist reddit sub if awash with people extolling the virtues of the True 200Thb card , and then, poeple saying "no way" could they survive on 30Gb. I asked what on earth they do and was told "Xbox live gaming". People really do that on holiday......... Sure - we watch a littel TV streamed, or a movie off my laptop - we are there for 2 months usually, but online gaming, which I do, gets left firmly at home!.

Interesting.

Past couple of times I've been over I've picked up a SIM at the AIS shop in one of the Hua Hin malls, and to be fair they definitely didn't steer me to a tourist sim - quite the opposite, asked me how long I needed, how much data I wanted. I'm still not sure quite what I bought, but it was about 300thb. biggrin I too would avoid the airport if you can - especially the unofficial shops in the baggage claim area. If you MUST buy at the airport, use the official shops only. Or maybe the 7-11 near the entrace to the rail station in the basement.

But that True SIM looks like a belting deal.

Any idea what the coverage is like in Koh Tao\Koh Samui? I'd imagine the answer these days, especially in Samui is "perfect".

(I'm out that way in a couple of weeks. biggrin)

re-edied - removed the question about tethering,

Tethering yes, 100% - Was linked to my tablet daily.

Coverage Tao -dunno, but put it this way, Koh Jum was perfect coverage and that's a tiny island with no major ferry terminal. Koh Chang great too. TBH I never even had to think about signal anywhere.
