First time I went to LA, it was 1992 and we were on a road trip in an Oldsmobile. Started in San Francisco then Yosemite, Death Valley, a few days in Vegas then headed for LA.

The freeway got wider and wider, more lanes and we had St.Etiene playing on the tape deck.

We saw a sign saying we had entered the city limits so pulled off the road and found a Taco Bell for lunch.

One of our number had to get to the 6th St Bus station to leave us and head back to San Francisco.

We had the map on the bonnet of the car (yes, a map) and a local asked if he could help.

'6th St, yes, see that freeway ramp over there, get on it and keep heading West for 50 miles and you'll see the sign for 6th St'

We then realised that it was a big place biggrin

I was surprised by how cold the water was. I hadn't thought about it and assumed it would be fairly warm forgetting just how large the Pacific is and dived straight in before jumping back out again rapidly biggrin
Went in for a paddle just to say i'd dipped my toes in the Pacific and got the feet froze off me, went on a whale watching boat in Santa Barbera next day and the guide was telling us that the cold water flows down from Greenland along the california coast.

In terms of NFL, LA has 2 teams now, the LA Chargers and LA Rams, previously San Diego Chargers and St. Louis Rams. The NFL schedule is due to release at the beginning of May so there's a good chance you'll get a home game for either team. Tickets are easily accessible on the Ticketmaster US site. Rams and Chargers share SoFi stadium as well.

9th or 10th of May, so not too long to wait!

Thanks for all the info from everyone. Some good recommendations. Slightly surprised Rodeo Drive could be dodgy though?

Greenland is in the Atlantic, the California current comes from BC. I’ve dipped my toes in the water up there and can confirm it’s also bloody freezing. It’s why the sea life is so rich along the California coast. Beautiful part of the world.

It certainly wasn’t four years ago. Very clean and upmarket, nothing dodgy about it.

For people unfamiliar with the US a lot of it can feel dodgy these days. The levels of homelessness and hard drug use are much higher than here. Certainly a land of contrasts.

That's my experience too. I left a Harry Winston event later than expected and even then didn't feel unsafe.

When I was there last there was a shooting on North Canon and then about a year ago there was another shooting literally 100 yards away on the same street.

N Canon runs behind Beverly Drive...

We been to the cheesecake factory one time and left quite late, think it was about 10pm and it felt a bit dodge especially as we had parked up on the car park near SaMo Blvd.

During the day its fine and never had a problem. Just watch out at night. IMHO. On the plus side there are police everywhere.

The only real issues we ever had in LA were both near The Broad.

Thanks for the info. Thinking now that 2 days will be enough in LA, and instead of flying to Vegas will drive via Grand Canyon.

The only thing to consider is travel time between some of the places, its a heck of a big place but also lots of traffic.
For example East Hollywood to SaMo can easily take an hour.

So just plan it out carefully, especially if you want to spend time at each spot.

If you are driving you also need to allow time to find parking which is totally down to luck of the draw .

Another interesting place to visit is the tar pits, its a bit dated but quite interesting at the same time.

A timely thread for me also, Are there any benefits to an EV in LA? I've been looking on Turo and a lot of the Tesla's are cheap (i'm guessing because there is so many on there) and I could live with charging it if there was discounted parking or EV only parking spaces. The only thing I can see online is being able to use the carpool lane with a single occupant.

Before anybody says anything about a Tesla, I've already got a 3 day hire booked on a Challenger Scat Pack wink

Fuel is dirt cheap so I can't see any bonus.

We have two days in LA in August - plan is:

Drive into LA from San Simeon...
Horse ride to see the Hollywood sign late afternoon (Sunset Ranch).
Evening walk and dinner in and about Hollywood. Hotel is in Hollywood.
Day at Universal. Evening, who knows?
Day doing Rodeo Drive, Hollywood Boulevard (if for any reason we have not done it at night), the Observatory perhaps, then drive onto Santa Monica Pier to say we have done most of Route 66.
Then to LAX for the flight home.

We thought Hollywood Boulevard was a dump and not worth the visit. Have a look at the Tripadvisor reviews.
Observatory was good and great views as was Rodeo Drive.

Sounds lovely - but the drive to Santa Monica has the potential to be a ball ache - but could be ok. Where are you staying?

We found it OK and easy enough to park on the street not far from the pier.

Giant car park - and I'm a little Santa Monica fanboy anyway - mixture of genuinely thinking it was nice and happy memories. It was also my $200+ breakfast which I haven't forgotten either laugh

One pointer, and it may have changed since I was there 20 years ago. If you find yourself in the jewellery district, turn around. Fast.
