I can understand. I've seen Bury. OTOH I've seen Prestwich/Prestbury (keep getting the 2 mixed up) in NE Manch, and places like Whitefield, and they are nice enough in parts.
Head along the M62 and try Rochdale or Middleton in that case..the two of them make Bury look OK..

How very dare you!! biggrin

Bury's quite nice in my totally unbiased opinion. There's a few council estates around but, in general, it's fairly decent.

No offence to Bury, I'm sure it's OK. Middleton isn't *that* bad, is it? I used to have to visit the Sarsons vinegar brewery there, never seemed that bad. Certainly not compared to Oldham. I worked there, it still caps my list of "totally irredeemable sh*tholes" and there's some stiff competition in there. I've been to Barnsley a few times, lived and worked in Grimsby and worked in Derby, amongst other jewels of the North.

I was thinking of some of the terrible dumps that I've been to over the years - Corby, Middlesbrough, Glasgow, Blackpool, Merthyr Tydfil, Hartlepool etc, but at least all of those have improved a fair bit in recent times. I still find some places, like Barnsley, Bradford, Dewsbury, Hull and Oldham rather disappointing.

Coalville Leicestershire, an old mining town, which hasn't moved on despite the pit closing over 30 years ago. Very grim place.

For grimness it is a draw between Grimsby and Hull - no contest!
Hull is far, far worse. I have lived and worked in both places. Grimsby is a godforsaken dump, but Hull is unspeakably horrible.

I have also worked in South Kirkby, near S Elmsall. Bloody horrible places both. Whoever mentioned Goldthorpe had it right. See also Mexborough, Wath on Dearne, all those towns near Barnsley.

Has nobody mentioned Oldham? Now that place is shocking. Nearly on the same scale as hull.
Hull is city of culture next year. There was going to be a new footbridge build over Castle Street to celebrate it isn't happening. There are so many places in the UK similar to Hull.Dreary council estates and lot's of poverty.Never mind the people have voted Brexit all is well.>smile

Cumbernauld.

Scarcely believable that a place like that could have been planned.

Last time I looked at a map, Derby was in the "midlands".

Geographically correct. However it feels very definitely like a Northern town.

The thread is gradually covering the whole country. Any decent places out there? (New Thread?)

Yeah, I know one is footballer land and near to Alderley Edge, the Home Of The Orange Woman, and the other is the other side of Manch. Just can't ever remember which way round they are. The problem is this: Prest-bury isn't near Bury but in Cheshire which is home to places like North-wich and Nant-wich. Prest-wich is near Bury and nowhere near Northwich, Middlewich or Nantwich. You see the origin of my confusion?

Oh dear, have you been caught doing a lot of bad things - and are having to carry out some form of Community Service ?
