I'm Scottish and have to say that Fort William is only one step away from being the worst place in Scotland - that honour goes to Cumbernauld.

Nothing to do there, shops are rubbish, pubs crap. Stay away or go elsewhere!

Thank you all for the suggestions.

In the end, we only had one day to waste, so we decided to drive out to Mallaig, taking lots of random detours on the way back.
The scenery was astonishing beautiful, and the roads fantastic! It appears the local council have been spending money on road improvements around that way, so it was mostly fresh tarmac!
Our course lasted the entire day on the Tuesday and we left early on the Wednesday.
We also occupied ourselves with a fun little road driving through (I believe) Glenn Nevis, and going for a little walk to take some photos.
There was a fantastic little sea food restaurant down on the quay, too.

I intend on taking my own back there, and to other places around the Highlands!

Thanks again guys!

Darren

Like everyone's already said, the roads are great

Bealach na Ba is quite a way from Fort William though.
