Hi
I would like to go to Edinburgh this weekend (sat till mon) with mrs. ISee.
I very much liked the Glen Eagles castle retreat, however it is slightly more than i wanted to spend.
Glen Eagles offer a package where each guest gets an activity included in their rate (I was looking to try out falconry, or clay pidgeon shooting whilst the mrs could go for spa pampering), however it comes out at just over £900 and I was hoping to spend no more than £600. We are doing this weekend away instead of a week abroad basically and at £900 we cannot justify it.

Could you guys and gals recommend soemthing close to Edinburgh that can provide these activities and is a big castle estate rather than a hotel for my budget please?

Cheers.

You could have a look at Dalhousie Castle, pretty well located for Edinburgh and think they do Falconry.

Another vote for Dalhousie Castle here! Great Spa and a lovely old building yet easy access to Edinburgh.

You might be lucky getting a room anywhere this weekend though with the Scotland / Ireland Rugby at Murrayfield, most places are booked up in advance.....

Depends what you mean by near, I've only ever heard fantastic things about here: Stobo Castle

They'll pick you up from Edinburgh and drop you back.

You do realise Gleneagles is about an hours drive from Edinburgh?

I can think of a couple of places near Perth which is about an hours drive North of Edinburgh. I think you'll struggle to find somewhere suitable really close to Edinburgh at such short notice.

Yeah. However, if I don't come up with something suitable for this weekend, I will get a massive "I told you so" routine from the mrs, since she's been asking for this for at least two months warning me that by the time I pull the trigger everything will be fully booked.

So you see I am at a point where I really, REALLY, need to find something suitable.

This place is near me, just off A1 east of Edinburgh in Haddington, East Lothian.

Might be worth a shout.

I am actually thinking: screw the castle retreat now. just a nice 5 star hotel with a spa in Edinburgh will do, I can try to arrange falconry or shooting separately.

Look on the brightside, at least your OH knows you very well. That has to be of some comfort...

Well it's not Edinburgh but Perthshire which has some lovely scenery. http://www.hilton.co.uk/dunkeld

Dunkeld is a quaint town with a few quirky shops too. The hotel has it's own private driveway for about a mile and is situated right on the River Tay, there's a few treatments available(massage/pedicure/manicure etc) plus pool with sauna and jacuzzi.
There are activities available such as clay shooting, quads, rifle shooting but I'm not sure if they're only available for groups. However you could always drive elsewhere to do falconry http://www.scottishfalconry.co.uk/ (this is based in Perthshire too)

Looks like it has availability and is in your price range.

A group of us stayed at Dunkeld Hilton last year and had a thoroughly good time.

Most of Edinburgh hotels are booked up due to the six nations Rugby that weekend. Friends have been trying to get anything they can all last week and have ended up going for a Travelodge as it was all that was left.

You could try http://www.macdonaldhotels.co.uk/marine/ as it has recently had a refit, does excellent food and has a new spa, and is only a short drive from Edinburgh and its amenities.

That's nigh on perfect, shame about the 1.2h drive to Edinburgh.
Thanks for that, it may well save my asss still.

And yeah she knows me too well. I just it would be a refreshing change to avoid the dissapointment that she expects... smile

We had a great time here too. The Landrover Experience Scotland is right around the corner with off road driving through the woods too!
