Just come back of a short skiing break in Italy and while I know it's always been expensive it just seems to have become ridiculous. The best price we could buy a pint of beer for was five Euro's the worst nine. A croissant on the mountain with a cup of coffee eight quid. I know the Euro is almost on Parity with the pound but the Europeans just seem to be taking the piss.
I pity the Economy of the usual summer holiday venues like Greece and Spain because the Brits are going to stay away. There were eight of us in our party all blokes and not one of us had booked a foreign holiday this summer, not because of the recession but because of the feeling that the Europeans are just taking the piss right royally.
If Italy was expensive one of our party skied France two weeks ago and said it was even worse. Rhyl here we come this summer.

Or am I just getting old?.

You are going to the wrong bit. Northern Spain is excellent, no brit tourists so no silly prices. A beer and a coffee are about 4 quid in very civilised surroundings and weather. Just don't go there and spoil it for mesmile

I must be getting old too!

Europe 1999-2007. USA 2008. Cornwall 2009!

I used to love Portugal, prices seemed to double when they joined they Euro, then shot up from that high level recently.

Maybe I'll go next year & stay away from the too touristy bits, like last poster suggested..

I was over in Calais a couple of weeks ago and there seemed to be very few Brits in the local supermarkets. Eastenders looked like it was getting ready to close down with only a third to a quarter of the stock they usually carry.

Europe is really no more expensive than most of the UK. London prices are comparable to Paris, I'd imagine. Southern France, in the holiday hotspots, is like Devon/Cornwall. In the rural areas it's very reasonable to most things - beer, shopping, gifts, days out etc etc. My parents go there a lot and holiday on a budget all the time..

You'll still pay €4.20 a pint in rural South France, €5 or €6 in town.

Paris is currently the most expensive City in the world, outside Japan (Tokyo and Osaka are 1st/2nd).

Southern France priced like Devon/Cornwall? rofl

FWIW, London is 27th (down from 8th 6mths ago)

London is very similar to Leeds for most things (cinema/theatre is a LOT more).

Paris though, I've heard very bad things about Paris in terms of stupendous expense, not been myself but it's been a subject on here before.

The euro is putting me off a european hol this year, parts of Turkey aint bad though, and still cheap.

redface

Where?!

Not where I am here in the South, half it.

After doing shopping for parents today, all seems to work out a bit cheaper for everyday items. But a million times better quality for supermarket veg.

We went to a place in Paris on the way back to the station. They wanted 16 euro for a pint of Heineken. Food wasnt too bad (not worse than London) but coffee or beer were comical prices.

Well I haven't been to Cornwall lately..but I remember St Ives a few years ago being horribly expensive..

Also heard Cornwall gets more sun than most of the Dordogne.. which surely is BS, lol.

HAHAHA yeah don't know what part of Devon and Cornwall you've been going to, but they sure as hell aint as expensive as southern France, especially the riviera!!

i'm not sure its the Europeans taking the piss, its just the exchange rates that are causing it.... my parents live there and over xmas paying 96 quid for every 100 euro rather than the 75 quid is used to be was massively painful.

Elster,
I'm in Rousset, outside Aix. It's €4.20 in my local, just a cafe in a very
sleepy little village.

Yes, €10 for 500ml of cooking lager seems to be the norm in Paris at the moment. Well done Gordon.

Conversely, I was in All-Bar-1 just off Oxford St on Friday lunchtime, and saw at least 3 beers for under £3.

I'm currently just outside Marciac, Gers is €2.50 for 1664.

Although most locals do just drink red wine, Armagnac and creme de menthe.

I do love the red wine from the pumps. smile

Elster,
That's not bad going, €2.50 wouldn't get you a 25cl in some bars in Aix.
