Europe is really no more expensive than most of the UK. London prices are comparable to Paris, I'd imagine. Southern France, in the holiday hotspots, is like Devon/Cornwall. In the rural areas it's very reasonable to most things - beer, shopping, gifts, days out etc etc. My parents go there a lot and holiday on a budget all the time..
Paris is currently the most expensive City in the world, outside Japan (Tokyo and Osaka are 1st/2nd).

Southern France priced like Devon/Cornwall? rofl

FWIW, London is 27th (down from 8th 6mths ago)
not sure where you're getting your figures from but Moscow is the world's most expensive city just one of many googled links and has been for the last couple of years. London is still in the top 5 AFAIK. After living in Moscow for 4 months, I can well believe it, first time I've ever heard anyone tell me that they thought London was cheap nuts

I didn't think London was that expensive when I was there, and I was on the beaten up aussie $$$. No worse than going out in Sydney

Paris was a joke. 9-10-11 euro's a pint. Barcelona was about half price.

We went to a place in Paris on the way back to the station. They wanted 16 euro for a pint of Heineken. Food wasnt too bad (not worse than London) but coffee or beer were comical prices.
I'm sorry, I don't actually believe that. Unless it was a gold plated lap dancing bar.

I'm off to Bruges this weekend, interested to see how it compares.

That's nothing smile

In the summer of 2005 I walked into my local to buy two bottles of 330ml Becks. I pulled out a 50 euro note and the bar girl looked at me as if I was a tool. That round cost me 68 euro yes 34 each! Approx 30 quid at today's prices.

(mind you my local at the time was Papagallos in St Tropez) wink

HAHAHA yeah don't know what part of Devon and Cornwall you've been going to, but they sure as hell aint as expensive as southern France, especially the riviera!!

i'm not sure its the Europeans taking the piss, its just the exchange rates that are causing it.... my parents live there and over xmas paying 96 quid for every 100 euro rather than the 75 quid is used to be was massively painful.
The point is that prices were getting daft in the Eurozone even last year, I was in Greece and the drinks were silly expensive then. A pint of the local beer, vodka and a mixer and a soft drink, over here I would expect to pay no more than £8 in Greece each round was 13ish equivalent. All the usual gift shops were empty and at the end of the week had a 50% sale (so you could say taking the piss). All this was before the pound crashed.
They have got greedy and this year they will pay for it, conversely British resorts will do well no doubt.

I would agree with that, Paris can be a shocker. Prices in Spain have always been cheaper than France and Barcelona was pretty reasonable last time I went.

For cigarettes/tobacco purchases I believe Belgium is now much cheaper than France.

We usually have a couple of weekends in Le Touquet each year which was never cheap anyway, that's off for now.

A tip for bar drinking in France, if you buy anything with a brand name, like Stella or Kronenbourg you will get chiselled. Buying the local brew is usually much cheaper and just as good.

If you find a bar that sells Gulden Draak, do yourself a favour and have 3 or 4.

Just buy a few crates of french bier and leave it all on your balconys through the day, then neck half before you go out.

Pikey economics in action.

Then I realised I was the odd one out, it being 25-30C here most days recently.

Just come back of a short skiing break in Italy and while I know it's always been expensive it just seems to have become ridiculous. The best price we could buy a pint of beer for was five Euro's the worst nine. A croissant on the mountain with a cup of coffee eight quid. I know the Euro is almost on Parity with the pound but the Europeans just seem to be taking the piss.
I pity the Economy of the usual summer holiday venues like Greece and Spain because the Brits are going to stay away. There were eight of us in our party all blokes and not one of us had booked a foreign holiday this summer, not because of the recession but because of the feeling that the Europeans are just taking the piss right royally.
If Italy was expensive one of our party skied France two weeks ago and said it was even worse. Rhyl here we come this summer.

Or am I just getting old?.
Bugger me!
Have a look at

The snow's just as white, I day ski pass for about 20 quid,70 Km on piste, beers 1 euro a pint, food's good, wall to wall top tottie in the town gagging for it because there's 7 women to every man out here!

1664 usually is cheapest on tap beer. As for cigarette prices they have gone up a fair bit, and don't like the dumb new rules that you have to go to a Tabac.

Was in Cannes a couple of weeks ago (wavey Swerni) - a simple 2 course meal in an average restaurant, with wine was around €55 each.

We all had to fiddle our expenses to get every meal through.

I'm just back from a weekend in Arc 2000. I ski every year, so I'm used to mountain prices, but paid.......

- €130 for a 3 day lift pass
- €72 for 3 days premium ski hire (skis only, no boots)

That was what I used to pay for 8 days only a few years ago. One lunchtime we were charged €7 for a small Coke and a very small portion of frites.

I am guessing that the value of the pound dropping also has a substantive negative impact.

Avoid the tourist spots and its not that expensive at all. Its the exact same as London. You go to the hot spots you're going to get fleeced.

Dude - you forgot to enigmatically allude to the crushing poverty and ill-health its crash will bring to us all.
