Most of Devon and Cornwall are far cheaper than almost anywhere else I've been in this country let alone Europe. As for St Ives being expensive you obviously went to the wrong places while you were there!
I can also categorically deny that Cornwall has more sun than the Dordogne, every b
d time I end up in Cornwall it bloody rains, most of the time in the Dordogne it has been sunny (with the odd mega thunderstorm thrown in).richyb said:

well having decided not to bother with europe for my latest trip, i have just come back from Marrakesh, cheap is not the word, i really could have stayed for the month for less that £200!!!! the Mrs and i were not scrimping and scraping and inc food, drink (no alcohol, due to it being rather hard to get hold of for some reason lol) a few gifts cigrettes etc etc we spent £140!! we went for what i suppose they would call an expencive meal, it cost circa £25!!!! 
all i can say was the place was amazing, no hassle really and very safe!!

No, it's not normally that expensive, it's just we don't like the English: you make too much noise, dress like tramps, get drunk all of the time, ask for chips with everything, insist on drinking cappuccino after 11am and, worst of all, refuse to wear sunglasses indoors.Oh yes, and your women are fat... but on the plus side... they are easy.

EDIT. Obviously in recent months the exchange rates changes but their drinks prices haven't.

France last year was an eye opener for me.
Even with the rate at 1.45 it wasn't worth buying wine or smokes over there. Most of the stuff in Carrefour was miles more expensive than I was expecting. And drinking out was horrendous (I hope it was just because it was Le Mans week but I remember paying £7 for a pint at a restaurant miles away...)
Just as well we will be mostly SC in northern Spain this year I saw. A week of BBQ and beer.
Luckily I have Turkey in June where I have had confirmation that a pint is still £1 like last year, a top notch lunch is about £4 and I can enjoy a three course dinner on the beach for less than a tenner.
It's places like Turkey and their VFM that reflect why we haven't been on holiday in Europe for 8 years now. And I don't see to be the only one who has knocked Europe on the head since they joined the Euro.

My mum is Dutch and she says that on the changeover, retailers just priced stuff at 1 Guilder = 1 Euro, and the same happened in Germany.
I know that our villa hols in the S of France, supplemented by good cheap supermarket food got horrendously expensive the year the Euro came in.
