One of the most random memories: camping in Mongolia with the retired Mongolian finance minister and his family, for 4 days!

About twenty years ago I met a 93 year old man called "Ike" in a pub called the Hark to Bounty in Slaidburn (Population around 300) in the Trough of Bowland, and he told me he had been to Clitheroe about five times (ten miles away) and Manchester once, way back in 1944, and the locals backed his story up....

Other than that he had never been out of the village.......

Sounds like some of the people where I grew up in rural Northumberland. Parochial doesn't even begin to describe it. One man, probably in his 60s, told me he had moved to Amble when he was 18 then protested that "they still call me the man from Broomhill." Broomhll is about 2 miles from Amble.

Another old man who worked in a petrol station was talking to my father when we were filling up wtih before going on holiday to France. His comment on France was "I went there in 1915, and didn't like it much." This would be in the early 1980s.

I'd done these by age 22 and although I go overseas each year, I've only added Barbados to the list in the 7 years since. That is despite promising myself I wouldn't get tied to a career and a mundane lifestyle, and the fact that without doubt my fondest memories are times I have spent away. I'm focussed next year on sticking to the new years resolution to do some proper trips!.....After coming back from Snowboarding in France over christmas of course wink

I think he probably had a pretty good reason for not liking it... hehe

Anyway - France is a wonderfull country if you exclude the actual people.

Haha, I actually sometimes like the sarcastic, cynical streak in French people, when I'm in the mood for it. If I'm in France, I usually am.

It's most often English expats that I've met there that annoy me the most. My parents live there, and every time I visit them I seem to get dragged to these miserable, long drawn out meals with everyone trying to out do each other on how French they are, and I hear these inane snippets of conversation in the supermarket about how they should have got their patio done yesterday "but you know how it is, hahaha." And I think, MY GOD I WANT TO KILL YOU. Go back to Milton Keynes you irksome canker blossom.

I spent just over two weeks there last month and my God I was glad to get back to Thailand.

Seems pretty similar (places and quantity) to my list (albeit I'm 34, and aside from Florida as a kid I didn't leave Europe until I turned 30, so the last 5 years have been a whirlwind of travel...)

Well, if we're waving our willies around...biggrin

54 countries in 38 years (although I haven't been anywhere new for a few years wink), and to add a PH slant I've driven in 45thumbup

Weirdest experience is an Iranian wedding where everyone was pissed up on moonshine and the fireworks display consisted of a maniac with an ancient rifle loaded with tracer roundseek

Bit of a bump from the dead, but the thought came into my head after I added my first visa to a brand new passport at the weekend. It felt strange seeing my well-stamped old passport replaced by something fresh and blank hehe

Here is my updated list from the last time this was done.

Age: 26
Countries: 28

UK (England, Scotland, Wales)
Eire
France (Le Mans, Paris, South Coast etc)
Germany (Ring, Cologne)
Holland
Italy
Spain (mainland, Tenerife, Lanzarote)
Switzerland
Austria
Belgium
Luxembourg
Croatia
Bosnia

Tanzania
South Africa
Qatar

China
Hong Kong
Thailand
Vietnam
Cambodia
Laos
Malaysia
Singapore
South Korea

Australia
New Zealand

USA

The most recent ones are in bold. Hope to add Taiwan, Japan and possibly India to the list before the year is out plus visiting a few of the others again smile

I know I have a couple more at least, but 33 is not a bad start. My wifes family have been counting for years and you have to be in a country for at least 8 hours and the airport does not count.

Let's see, this is like a visa application...

England, Scotland, Wales, IoM, NI, Eire
from the top, Spitzbergen, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands, Guernsey, Jersey, France, Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar, Monaco, Italy, Malta, Croatia, Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, Morocco, Madeira, Canary's, Azores, Cape Verde, Bermuda, USA (Florida, Alaska, California, Washington, Oregon, Hawaii), Canada, Mexico, Belize, Costa Rico, Panama, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Haiti, Turks & Caicos, Puerto Rico, USVI, BVI, St Maarten, St Barth's, Guadeloupe, Antigua, Dominica, St Lucia, Barbados, St Vincent & Grenadines, Trinidad, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Falkland Islands, Chile, Galapagos Islands, Easter Island, French Polynesia (Tuamotos, Marquesas, Rangiroa, Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora), Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, South Korea, Japan, and Russia, the other end.

81 or something. Includes some territories and dependancies. Probably forgotten a few islands (they all look the same after a while tongue out ). Helps that I have a ten-foot map of the world with them all marked right behind me now.

Aged 33, but if you counted the ones I've actually paid to go to by choice, the list would be considerably shorter.

Oh, and they are all sh it. There is nowhere I would settle other than Northumberland smile (maybe Scotland at a push, or the US, but no where else. Maybe Canada)
