I'm not far up Western Road from the C&W sites, did some work (for my present company) at C&W a few years ago too. Excellent canteens there.

My dad did quite a long stint at C&W.

Now works for Verizon in Reading.

Well Mr 5678, your dads description sounds suspiciously like my ex colleague Maurice. If that's the case then tell him Phil says hello. I left BRA01 when they were giving away money (redundancy). Last time I spoke to Maurice I was still enjoying a good long career break but you can let him know I'm now working again, in Wokingham.

Phil
That would be correct Phil! Small world isn't it! He took redundancy last year so now leads a life of leisure at home. I'm seeing him later today so will mention you said hello and will pass on your news.

Cheers!

Wow that brings back memories. I did a stint at ICL qnd visited BRA01 several times. Mainly to use the facilities in the old machine hall, but I was based up at West Gorton. Doubt that the Gorton site is still around though.

This must have been early 90's or something. Wow how things change.

I did a year at BRA07, got onto the FJ grad scheme that probably would have landed me at 01 but decided against it..

Bracknell will always be home though - so who knows, I might end up going back at some point!

I was told that where this building now stands there used to be another building that they interrogated (tortured) captured German and Italian soldiers in the war. eek
Word has it that there still might be underground tunnels as they abandoned them in a hurry and tried to cover what was going on down there. yes

Now that's interesting.

Anyone here work at HP in Pinewood, Crowthorne before it closed? I have fond memories of that place and loved working there. Every work place should have its own bar!

Eugh - this thread makes me feel slightly ill. I was at ICL STE04 and STE09 for a couple of years, and hated it with a passion!

Leaving was one of my best career moves. If not the best.

MAN05 has been abandoned a few years now, moved to MAN33/34/35 although 35 has since been abandoned and British Cycling have got half of 34 (I think that's the case anyway it's been a while!)

My old man used to work there, I remember him being able to fill up his company car at the petrol station there?

And the fun days with treasure hunts in the woods, HP has lost it's charm in recent years...

I used to work at ICL BRA01 as a computer operator in the late eighties

They used to have over 20 mainframes in the ground floor running a mix of ICL VME, DME and TME.

The machines I worked on were Series 3900, Series 2900 and briefly ME29's and Series 1900.

Used to love working on VME a wonderful operating system. We seem to be going back to that methodology with VMWARE

full circle it seems... VMWARE does have a whiff of mainframe about it. Although I am not the biggest fan of VME

Yep me, from 1996 until it closed (up the stairs through the doors then turn left and go right to the end by the windows) then got moved to that god awful office at Amen Corner from whence I escaped to France in 2007!!

From what I remember VME was superb I was an ace SCL developer and did a lot in COBOL, Application Master and IDMSX programming.

I also remember a residential COBOL course at Beaumont Windsor, which was really a lot of fun...

That's what started me on the long road to programming...

Happy memories....

Yup my office is technically next door but work from home, rarely in Bracknell, more likely to be in London.
