Sainsburys Self-Checkout Glitch
Discussion
Yesterday in Morrisons I bought two pizza express pizzas, normally at £4.99 per pizza. They had an offer on of 1 pizza = £3.00, so £6.00 for two pizzas.
I got to the self serve checkout, scanned and hit finish and pay, when another, unadvertised offer came up "Pizza express offer -£3.98" So that was two Pizza Express pizzas, for £1.01 each.
I didn't say anything

I never use auto check-outs, the supermarkets are making billions so I make a point of making them do my scanning for me
Popped in to Sainsburys in Basingrad centre today. They were appealing for checkout staff as they were being swamped by pensioners, 4 deep per till.Do I go to the self-checkout and start self-scanning my 4 items immediately, or do I queue behind multi-pensioners?
No brainer!
(for the record, it discounted my meal deal after I chose payment type - like I knew it would)

Simple tip:
When the total comes up on screen (and you're sure the relevant discount hasn't been applied) press the 'Go Back' button and the hey potato the discount is there and the price goes down. If all else fails, shop at Waitrose.

Have to go to finish and pay I believe to get the discounted price been over a year since was trained/worked on them so things may have trained now. Must say that our's along with tesco's seem to be the easiest to use out of the self-scan checkout's I have tried.
Not sure what system morrisons use but the one's in our local Lincoln store are so awful and slow they always seem to freeze when I save items and even I struggle to use them they always require a supervisor for no reason the scales are that sensitive they say incorrect item all the fking time and stop me scanning stuff the stupid things :/
Would doubt be a major glitch with the tills they are checked daily and we have error log's every day if any error's are picked up by staff or customers so they can be fixed on the system over night well at sainsbury's anyway. Most error's if any are due to the old ticket being shown on the shelf as it has not being changed meaning when scanned on the updated system the price appears different to what you thought but this is a very rare occasion to be honest as if this is the case and we are caught the maximum fine is £1000 per item! not product so you can see it could all get very very expensive...

I appear not to be the only one. How come more of a big deal hasn't been made out of this?!
I mentioned this on a meal deal thing the other week - the lad there told me that you had to press the "pay by cash" button to get your total!Considering its supposed to be simple and intuitive, I'd say its a fail. Needs sorting.

Erm, what's un-intuitive about it?Considering its supposed to be simple and intuitive, I'd say its a fail. Needs sorting.
No matter which payment type you select, the multi-save discounts are taken off before the payment is taken.

Erm...it doesnt show you what you need to pay. Thought that was pretty obvious. Do you just pay whatever when in a shop, or do you like to know how much you owe before hand? Personally speaking, I prefer to know whats owing beforehand. I'm not suggesting Sainsbury's over charge, but regardless, having to press 'pay by cash' to get a total isn't intuitive. No matter which payment type you select, the multi-save discounts are taken off before the payment is taken.
From a software perspective the only reason why they might not make the deduction calculation until the payment is made is in case there are further combinations to be scanned. A double purchase deduction can not be assumed incase a third or fourth purchase of the same product is ruled out, for example.

Really don't see what the issue is here - it's not like you have to insert the payment before you get the total for it.

But as soon as you hit a 'pay by....' button, you get the total.

No you dont. Well, you get a total, just not the correct total. I think thats kind of the point of the thread. Have you used self-check out at all?Really don't see what the issue is here - it's not like you have to insert the payment before you get the total for it.

I mind I went to tesco one day to get screenwash, needed it ASAP, and bought a huuuuge pre mixed thing, price was something like £8 or so. Thought 'meh, might as well'
So off to the self check out bit, put it through... £2 please. Bang tidy.
There was also a glitch at asda stores where 24 can crates of tennent's only cost £7.49 I think it was

It subtotals when you 'finish and pay'.
If you go straight to payment it misses this. Have noticed it a couple of times but never been caught out.
I'm assuming that your butler told you this and subsequently explained that it was only because Waitrose was closed. If you go straight to payment it misses this. Have noticed it a couple of times but never been caught out.
Going to a supermarket is so very northern, don't you think?
