Happens to me in Sainsburys in Cornwall where I live. On a big shop, you hit finish and it gives you one price, then you think it is a little too much, so hit back, and then hit finish again and it applies the discount.

Eh? But you HAVE to select a payment method anyway? So you can press 'Pay By Cash' or 'Pay By Card' or 'Pay By Coupon' or 'Pay By Gift Card' or whatever. It doesn't get much more intuitive than that.

I work fir Sainsbury's, and yes this is a common problem, especially with the older style self checkouts. Surprised that there's no fix for it just yet but hopefully with the new style self scans it'll happen less or not at all. Irritating in our store as we have more self checkouts than manned tills.

had this problem several times, they're very sneaky but what you have to do after scanning your items you have to press some button on the screen that has offers then select it, its too confusing for me so I go to a main checkout.

I wonder if you can keep doing that if you still think the price is a little too much? smile

confused

Scan items, press one of the tender types, and you get the correct total, minus any discounts.

What could possibly be any easier than that?

Considering the PH demographic is generally computer literate, educated types, some of you don't half appear to have difficulties performing normal, everyday tasks.

And wait for an extra 15 mins! That makes sense.
The self-scan things are a pain in the arse. What with the erroneous 'extra' items it thinks are in the bag and having to await approval if I'm buying booze, I can't be bothered with them. I don't care if it does take an extra few minutes, I'm never in a hurry anyway. I'll stick with the human run tills thanks.

Ditto. The more self-service tills there are, the fewer jobs there are for the sort of person who currently waves the barcodes across the scanner.

Given that the price suggested by the shop includes an element to pay the checkout staff, why don't the self-service systems offer an automatic discount ? Is everyone happy paying more than they should for less in the way of actual service offered ?

Kinda related in terms of Sainsbury deals...

They are doing a 3 for 2 on all biscuits ("cheapest product free"). Problem is, I think, that it is fine if you just buy three £2 products - you save £2. However, if you buy three £2 products and three 50p products, do you save £1 or £2.50 when you run it through the tills? Am I correct in thinking you won't get the benefit you expect (ie not save £2 and 50p)... or is this my Ambiwlans moment?

I mean, you have these products six products:

(£2) (£2) (£2) (50p) (50p) (50p)

I would group them in my mind as such but would the computer apply it as

(£2) (£2) (50p - free) and (£2) (50p) (50p - free)

?

Thus to maximise the savings, you'd have to buy the products in two groups/rounds of shopping.

My mate uses the self scan at Tesco.

He sticks a few bottles of whiskey in his bag but doesn't scan it. When he gets to checkout he waits for the woman to come over and when it says if there are any items you can't scan he says "oh, I might not have scanned some chocolates" she then says ok let's look, and he then sees (as the purchase list) scrolls past and says "Oh yeah there it is!" And she's then says "You're a ok then" and walks off and after he pays off he goes!

Apparently.

That'll show 'em!
I went into a store a few days ago and bought items that were very light and which didn't register in the bagging area - and ones that needed de-tagging and age verification.

The lady on the self service spent more time going backwards and forwards sorting out the problems with my self service till than she would have done had she been on a regular till.

But the machine doesn't know how much you need to pay at that point as the coupon option is also on that screen which could reduce the amount you need to pay further.

I thought that the idea of the self service tills was that you don't have to pay for anything?

You'd be mistaken for thinking you had to hand over payment before finding out the total the way he's going on. Click finish, enter coupons if applicable, select payment method, be presented with total, pay.

It does it every time. It only applies the discount after you have selected your payment type not before. Whilst I am sure some slip through the net none of them will show before you select your payment type.
This, my local store always shows full price until you select payment type then the final figure is correctly shown

Guess they managed to fix the glitch since 2011.....
