I'd rather eat my own arm than use one of those self checkout things.

Awful experience.

If you only have a few items they are great; I love them as you can quickly pop in, grab a few things and get out quickly, as long as there aren't too many ditherers using them.

Supermarkets stress me out massively so I just want to be in and out ASAP, hence why we get our main shop delivered and I only go to a supermarket to get odds and sods and the Christmas food shop.

Agreed,

Consider this aswell -

Do you get a discount for using the self checkout? you are in effect taking the role of the checkout person, they can reduce staffing levels putting people out of work, the savings may get passed on but that's not strictly how retail works.

I like to get at least a 15% discount for doing their work for them. Sometimes they notice but I just feign helplessness (I can carry that off quite well).

EFA.
not the brightest thing on the planet to do as they have cameras on these areas and you give them your details so they know who you are...

They should make them basket only. The amount of times I've seen people (mostly women) with whole trolleys clogging up the system.
"But it doesn't say 'No trolleys'."
"It doesn't say 'No cars' either because it should be fking obvious to even a complete moron the purpose of the damn things is to hasten the experience for light shoppers you stupid bint."

Our Sainsburys is trialling a new system where you scan everything as you place it in the trolly/basket with your smart phone, then pay using a credit card stored in the app and leave.

Queuing at self-scan checkouts is sooooooo passé hehe

Nor at 6pm on a weekday. Or any Saturday afternoon.

It's next to the self scan checkouts, so the self-scan monkey runs over to authorise. It seems the mobile-app checker-outers get priority smile

So most shops (due to alcohol, pills etc) are going to need authorising anyway.

Yep, I've noticed this when using cash.

Total was shown as e.g £20.87, I started loading with loose change in my pocket to get rid of it, then put a £20 note in, and it then had re-calculated and applied discounts to take the total £18.53 or similar and I got all my change and a load more back.
mad

The way they dispense change drives me nuts, they seem to give you as many small denomination coins as possible!

My nearest large Tesco has that although with their handsets that you collect at the entrance rather than your own smartphone.

I don't know why all the chains aren't going this way (scan straight into your bag) rather than chunky space-wasting confusing self-scan checkout machines. From Tesco point of view it has the additional advantage that it tells you offers as you scan things so chances are you buy more stuff.

I will go out of my way for this sort of scan straight into your bag system. Not having to queue and unload everything on to a belt or rescan everything, is a huge timesaver. I would also prefer it over online shopping, because I can still check use by dates as I select stuff, don't have to put up with random substitutions, or wait in for a delivery man, and best of all I can keep my OCD of packing things into a bag per shelf/cupboard/fridge/room etc satisfied smile

Self scanning with handsets has been around for decades, my local Sainsburys had it when I worked there as a student 20 years ago, most large branches of Sainsburys, Tesco and Asda have that facility.
