I know this is really random but I was wondering if there is anybody else who's noticed the same thing that I've noticed at 4 different branches of Sainsburys in London, big and small - City Road, Golders Green, Brompton Road and Cromwell Road.

If you buy 2 items on a deal, for instance today I went to get a Pepsi and they are doing 2 for £1.70 instead of £1.20 each and then swipe them through the self-checkout and then hit Pay Now it will come up offering you a payment method for a total cost of £2.40 (i.e. no discount applied). If you then hit back it will make the calculation and add the line into the invoice with the discount applied and therefore a -£0.70 line and you can then Pay Now for the right price.

Am I the only one that's seen this on products of all types or do Sainsburys get away with just charging extra and presumably most people don't even realise?

Has happened to me a couple of times when paying by card, never when on debit. Happened at M&S, too.

It's happened to me in Kingston too. I'm very careful now.

I appear not to be the only one. How come more of a big deal hasn't been made out of this?!

The one in Angel - near Chapel Market doesnt apply the discounts until you select a payment method. For a meal deal for example it will scan the usual prices and give a total of (for example) £4.50 but after selecting cash / card the total will change to £3

I suppose they do skim a bit of money off the unweary but then again how many people buy two donuts (another example) and select a quantity of 1 on a daily basis? Or even buy two jam dognuts and say they are ring donuts to save themselves 30p per donut?

Well that's theft and prices already factor this loss in.

I think it must be the temporary offers that slip through, maybe someone forgets to code one in now and then? Dine in for £10 always works, 2 cans of Red Bull for £2 often doesn't.

It does it every time. It only applies the discount after you have selected your payment type not before. Whilst I am sure some slip through the net none of them will show before you select your payment type.

Hmm interesting, so if I click Card then it will auto update to get the correct price? I'm inclined to go back now just to find out - maybe later in the afternoon. I don't think I've ever got that far because seeing the wrong amount on screen there always deters me.

As I said, it doesn't always round down for card but will for cash. Not sure how/why, but when paying on card and buying multiple items I've realised when checking my receipt afterwards that I've been done.

Yep, that's it. I go everyday as it is next to my work and never seen it do it before I select payment type (usually card).

It subtotals when you 'finish and pay'.

If you go straight to payment it misses this. Have noticed it a couple of times but never been caught out.

I have noticed the opposite way at Asda - 3 for £4 on ales that are not marked so on the shelf. Funny that I didn't point it out to them!

Yep, I've noticed this when using cash.

Total was shown as e.g £20.87, I started loading with loose change in my pocket to get rid of it, then put a £20 note in, and it then had re-calculated and applied discounts to take the total £18.53 or similar and I got all my change and a load more back.

There's something odd about the way Sainbury's calculate discounts, as they are not applied when you buy online (we sometimes buy cases of wine from the website), it's only applied when your local store charge your card when preparing the order - the actual amount given on the website is incorrect. It tells you this at the time, but still quite strange.

This is correct. It auto updates. I don't trust it though, so I always do the go back and then confirm method.

Also, it has missed out some of my offers before, but it was like £1 or so in total so I didn't bother to wait for the one staff member they have monitoring 12 self service checkouts to be available..

I never use auto check-outs, the supermarkets are making billions so I make a point of making them do my scanning for me
