And you really think the original cockney's had heard of the Berkeley Hunt?
It's more likely that they'd heard of the Berkeley Hunt than the Berkshire Hunt, yes. Because the Berkshire Hunt doesn't exist.http://www.oldberkshunt.co.uk/

Berkeley Hunt was very famous, in London too

I stand corrected. However, I stand by the pronunciation point. If 'berk' came from 'Berkshire' we'd pronounce it 'bark'. We don't.
Berkeley is pronounced 'Barclay' too though, as in Berkeley Square in that LondonHugo a Gogo said:

Both the Berkeley and the Berkshire exist. Both are suggested as being the root of the cockney rhyming slang by sensible websites. I doubt we're going to resolve this here as I doubt anyone really knows.

The killer fact for me on this one is that Berkshire is pronounced Barkshire, therefore 'berk' can't come from Berkshire, it has to be Berkeley, which is pronounced as it is spelled.
That makes some sense - I've always had to gloss over the jump from "Bark" to "Berk" pronunciation when explaining this. However there is a local primary school which is named "Berkeley" and pronounced "Barcly", so it doesn't really help around here.Hugo a Gogo said:
the "Old Berks" hunt is not called the Berkshire Hunt, it's not in Berkshire either
if you want to claim Berk comes from 'the Old Berks Hunt' that's fine, that's a 3rd choice
the Berkeley Hunt was very famous
I suggest you read their website. The first sentence reads "The Old Berkshire Hunt Ltd dates back to 1830 in it’s present form but the country has been hunted since about 1760." Old Berks is a contraction.if you want to claim Berk comes from 'the Old Berks Hunt' that's fine, that's a 3rd choice

Ok. I give up.
At work today, simply ordering a new heavy duty stapler with an existing lab analyst and a fellow "new starter" colleague, both of of whom are equally as juvenile as me...
Analyst: First we need the master catalogue
[fetches a Bates Office Supplies book]
This is the master Bates catalogue
Myself and colleague: [snigger]
Colleague: [Turns to stapler section] Ooh look at this one... [points to description] "Adjustable deep throat design"
Myself and Analyst: [cracking up laughing just as the lab supervisor walks past the window]

Berkeley Hunt, is based in Gloucestershire, near Tetbury & Dursley.

Well against my better judgement I followed the link above to the classic Mumsnet threads and started reading the "Things you used to think were true..." one.
After an excellent titifilarious start (I thought my long haired neighbour who read me bible stories was the real Jesus, I thought soldiers were being captured by gorillas) I stumbled upon the utterly fantastic:
"I thought a c*nt was a baby horse until I was into my teens"
(later on it is revealed it is based on some confusion over colt, foal etc)
After the man-hater reputation over there it almost restores your faith in the fairer sex!
