Then I've obviously misjudged. I thought the intended meaning was "the child had no viable retort and sat down". The idea of retorts (in the present sense) having value was not one I had come across before, and standing down has (to me) a specific meaning which does not apply in this context.

Not for me to judge, it was one of the first things that came to hand and made me chuckle. No malice meant. smile

It wasn't a serious question. I hadn't come across the 'valuable retort' expression either, and although I don't think I would have quoted it on this thread, had I happened on the original post I would have assumed you meant 'viable' too.

We have 'smilies' to convey what we can't put into words or express feeling or meaning, see above. wink
It was perfectly placed - where I was extolling the virtues of our language and how we don't use enough of it which is a great shame. Whilst i'm not very good at English, I do enjoy it, appreciate it and try to use a bit more of it.

We're being very serious this morning, can't we just swear at each other for a bit instead? tongue out

I read your reply but can't see that it changed the fact that I would have assumed you meant 'viable' rather than 'valuable'. I gather that you are happy with your choice of the word that you used. I must say I agree with SC about the 'standing down' too.

https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/stand...

but I suppose it could be stretched to fit the situation described.

Just a quick question.

Daughters schoo, trip coach was very late the other day as the wipers stopped working in heavy rain.

The driver chose to drive on slowly but should he of called for a replacement vehicle and recovery of the defective coach or not.

I saw it in Auto Heroes on the news stand here in France. A wonderful article on the Jaguar XKKS. "Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing" is how I would describe the magazine. But the French seem to love it smile

Ok, so I've just brought this and done alot to this already. Fitted new break, pads, suspension refurbished alloys. Taken off aloud exhaust and fitted a standard one for now.

So I have to fix this engine problem. Feels like its starving of air or fuel. Its not going as fast as it should . What should I start with doing first. My first though was fuel filter, check all plugs. Air filter.

Anything else I can do ?

Let's say someone who was not a lawyer wanted to offer a specialised legal service using salery based legal staff who have no ownership. Can the company obtain the correct insurance as long as the work is carried out by a qualified professional or would you need to have a lawyer in an offical officer capasity to make it legal?

What's the deal with the cd deals Thai aye always advertised on random TV channels amongst daytime TV programmes. Their always "the best collection of rock/classic/swing every made for only £14.99 a month" followed by not available in shops. Along with the strange royal wedding memorabilia only adeverised in the ball pages of the guardian, it seems like a very limited way of doing business. Is it just one guy in his back bedroom who's already rushed off his feet or a multinational who only want to sell a few units a year?
