Union membership is on a steady decline in this country, although that income for labour is currently large, its only going one way. The other 60% they receive from individual donors could easily shift to a new party if the people who make donations see Labour as a right off. That's more than enough money to build momentum behind a new party. Would the unions then come under pressure to back the "New Labour", I suspect they would.
