I'm no particular Lewis fanboy other than watching him race but I think everyone should leave Lewis alone. I doubt he gives a toss what you lot think.

It's part of the British psyche that I absolutely despise. Someone does well and all the jealousy comes out of the woodwork trying to shoot him down. You see it absolutely everywhere. Whilst I'm not fan of the Americans, I agree with their excellent attitude where individuals people are encouraged to do well and celebrated them when they do, not belittled. Whatever your taste in clothes, he's a double world champion FFS, and a British Champion at that on the cusp of being a triple by years end. Celebrate that we have a sportsperson that capable.

I don't think anyone has an issue with his success; I most certainly don't, it is that he looks and comes across as a bit of a tit and a try hard, and therefore is ripe for a bit of piss taking.

He holds a British passport and is a British citizen. He's living as an ex-pat there. Just like David Coulthard is too. Or are you saying that DC is also no longer British? Or does the fact that DC is white, middle-aged, and looks 'respectable' make it ok for him?

If you want to know what I am saying, all you have to do is read it.

But if you require further explanation, as far as I am concerned, if you fk off to another country because you want to hang on to even more of your enormous wealth, you forfeit the right to call yourself British.

There are some great British champions with whom it would be difficult to find fault. I rather like Greg Rutherford as an example - he appeared to do a "reverse-Lewis" during London 2012. When Greg was interviewed before his event, he was a bit odd - trying to be hard and even a bit gangsta, as far as I could work out. After he made the Gold medal jump, he was interviewed and he started to "big himself up" and then seemed to have a Damascene conversion - he realised that he didn't need to pretend to be the best in the world and pose: he had just proved he was the best in the world. Since then, every interview with him seems genuine and relaxed - comfortable in his own skin.

Lewis seems to me to have gone the other way. When he was a neophyte in F1 he was relatively normal. Now he has proved himself on the track, he seems to be intent on proving something off the track. Perhaps the "Straight Outta Compton" persona was the true Lewis, repressed in order to conform to F1 norms - and now he has proven himself on the track he can release the true Lewis. However, his middle class Stevenage upbringing doesn't really suggest anything other than a young man who is now trying too hard to conform to a stereotype that doesn't suit him.

Agree entirely.

I've said it before; he doesn't look comfortable in what he wears and how he acts and comes across when away from his "work" environment; he just doesn't carry it off well, it is if he is doing it because "that is what you do" when you want to be young, cool and successful, he is almost a caricature of that sort of person.

It's a shame as he just sets himself up for ridicule.

From twitter.

"My Eagle represents a visionary. I'm a seeker and i'm willing to push the limits of self-discovery" - which is nice. I think it means he has got a tattoo of a bird.

Alert the news. Tattoo's have meanings to those who decide to have them.

When I've seen him interviewed outside of F1, he comes across as a nice young chap. He seems perhaps a little shy and reserved; he is not blessed with enormous wit or a larger-than-life character that can hold a room (although I have only seen him interviewed with other celebs who outshone him - a tough comparison for sure). No shame in that - there are very few people who have worked hard enough to have developed world-beating talent in a sport and have a persona that can dominate a chat show (Andy Murray, anyone?).

Perhaps this is why he compensates with a slightly odd pattern of behaviour off the track? He will never be Stephen Fry, so he might as well appear interesting for other reasons.

Or, he fancies a tattoo of an eagle - then came up with some contrived nonsense about why he did it.

Eagles are not 'visionary' the only things they seek is things to eat and from my albeit limited avian knowledge are not big on 'self discovery' - it's nonsense like this that makes people poke fun.

If he said 'fancied a great big kick ass tattoo of an eagle' it would have been more honest and less self aggrandising.

Still he's a big boy - and wouldn't post stuff like this if he couldn't live with the gentle ribbing.

I've got nothing against the guy, it's just that all these "selfie" type posts he sticks on twitter are actually carefully staged professional shots. He obviously has a group of lackies following him about and bigging him up. He just doesn't need it, he does his talking on the track and is obviously very talented and a great competitor, the rest of of it is just being a tit.

Surely a visionary would see that drawing things on your neck makes you look a bit tttish?
