There is no air granted, but you would still burn up before you got anywhere near the sun.

Ok. To summarise: in space the temperature is a fixed -270 degrees C. But you will fry to a crisp if you sail too close to the Sun?

Got it.

No. You would get warmer, but you aren't a vacuum.

I guess solar radiation?

Crown and Mag' courts.

Why do they still use a bible to get people to swear on even though the people in it and taking the oath may not be religious?

There are several options - you can swear on the bible or other relevant holy book, or simply affirm (declare that you will tell the truth). My own preference is to use whichever version the jury (or bench) is likely to be expecting - I have no particular religious beliefs, but am paid to tell the truth.

what is 'heat' then?
energy transfered by radiation would be classed as heat, to me

why does a thermos need reflective lining to keep heat in, if heat can't cross the vacuum?

temperature doesn't exist in a vacuum though

Heat energy can be transferred by - oh hang on, it's in the CGSE syllabus : http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/...

Only two of the transfer forms require a medium, the other is pure EM radiation.

Two phrases ive always wanted to know the meaning of,or at least since they first appeared a couple of years ago.
I seem to be hearing these phrases numerous times every day now -
"Think Tank" WTF-ing hell is a think tank??? confused
"Payday Loan" has some sort of industry sprang up in recent years which caters for people who need to borrow money on the same day they recieve their wages? or am i missing something?

No. They take out a (ludicrously high interest) loan and then pay it back on pay-day.

Yes, but in deep space...
heat energy travels through a vacuum as electromagnetic radiation; it does not need a medium to travel through.

the temperature in deep space is roughly 3 Kelvin / -270C, but it can vary and as you might expect it gets warmer in the vicinity of hot objects like stars

edited for persistent bad speeeeeling. 'cos im an idiot.

the heat energy can cross the vacuum. the vacuum prevents heat loss by conduction and convection, but not radiation, which does not require a medium.

the reflective lining is to minimise the loss of heat through radiation, which happens mostly at infrared wavelengths (just a bit too long for us to see) in the case of delicious tea.

the only difference between radiation at infrared wavelengths and visible wavelengths is the wavelength itself, and as such IR radiation will be reflected back inward just as effectively as visible light.

also edited. still a 'tard.

Yes, but in deep space...
heat energy travels through a vaccuum as electromagnetic radiation; it does not need a medium to travel through.

how can the temperature of nothing (a vacuum) vary?

there is heat , but no temperature

temperature is a property of matter, a vacuum is the absence of any matter

heat is energy

it was a rhetorical question

hugo a gogo,

space isn't a perfect vacuum, even interstellar space (apparently) has a few atoms per cubic meter.

temperature is just a measure of the average kinetic energy of some matter.

so space definitely has a temperature.
