I'm going to go a bit Health & Safety here but living in a house with 3 women who don't quite grasp concepts like electricity + knife, I invested in a set of these that now live next to the toaster. Actually, we're on the 2nd set. The first set got burnt when they were immediately placed on the toaster for the duration of the crumpets,

Or, just use plastic knives to get stuff out of toasters. No risk of electromacution there.

If the crumpets are stuck.. I assume they are done and the toaster is likely to be hot... in which case shoving plastic in doesn't seem the greatest idea to me. Unless you guys like plastic on your crumpets?

Thank fek the circuit tripped.
Warning for other parents out there. We lost a toaster in similar circumstances recently....

You can use metal knives in a toaster, it just demands a steady hand and a degree of brinksmanship

It makes it more likely to cause damage to the element or the mica which holds the element which means you would then have a loose live wire floating around in your toaster Here's what we do: - Toast/roll/bap gets stuck - put it on for another couple of cycles.
- Bread becomes carbon and is smaller
- Turn toaster off at the wall, turn toaster upside down and shake contents out onto a large tray.
If the toaster continues to jam, throw it away and buy a decent toaster like a Dualit classic Simples. No knives, special implements, electric shocks etc.

Encouraging your kids to burn or discard things that become an inconvenience? Hope they don't bear this in mind when you get old and they've got to pick a nursing home...
