Some friends of ours had a baby boy about 6 months ago.

They have him a normal Christian name and he has the dads surname (unmarried). All good so far.

Then, she wanted to give the middle name John. He wanted his mothers maiden name to survive for sentimental reasons.

So they now have a child called <Firstname> 'John Mclean' <surname>

Yippee ki yay motherfker

I was talking to a mate about being ahead of the curve and naming children before the names come back into fashion.

We reckoned Keith and Trevor were good bets for 'not coming into fashion back soon'
Barry and Roger, too.
Clive and Geoff (with a G...)

I have a shortened version as my name, my parent's reasoning being there was no point calling me the full version when everyone would just abbreviate it anyway. Seems logical to me.

This could be worthy of a thread on its own!

I'll add Terry and Kevin.

I recall a child in one of my dtr's swimming classes being called Tiger. Obviously its "tyger". he was an out of control idiot.

dealt with a tnt recently whose child was called Hermione Skylar "surname".

What you both like harry potter and breaking bad but couldn't decide ? TBF nothing wrong with Hermione, but somehow that child isn't going to be going to be schooled at a quaint 18th c castle with centuries of tradition, coming home at the end of term with a trunk and satchel: more like a 70's flat roofed "academy".

My daughter recently gave birth.

Her surname begins with H, so I suggested Horatio Hatstand H....., but she wasn't impressed.

There does seem to be a propensity of parents calling their new babies 'cute' names.

Fine when they are a 'cute ikkle baby' - but this kid may need to write a CV, go for job interviews, book business meetings at some point in the future.
This. Do people think their kids are nothing but toys or things to show off on Facebook these days?
Of course not, don't be ridiculous.

They're a way to unlock loads of extra benefits and guarantee housing too! thumbup

My son is Maximilian but he's called Max or Maxi 99% of the time. He's then got the choice later in life as to what form of the name he feels best suits him.
He has indeed. I expect he'll go for 'Dave'. coffee
