I suddenly have the phrase "back-combing" in my mind for some reason. Is this relevant?

Ha. Backcombing From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Backcombing (also known as teasing or ratting) is a way of combing hair which is used to create volume as well as to create certain hairstyles. Backcombing means repeatedly combing the hair towards the scalp, causing the hair to tangle and knot up. This method is often used in creating various big hair styles such as beehives and dreadlocks. I guess regularly driving a car previously owned by 6 hairdressers means I learn about that s t by osmosis. I'm waiting for my first period, still.

Perhaps having hair very similar to the bloke in the pciture I feel I can comment .. and yes, I am perfectly happy with my metrosexuality thankyouverymuch You need layers and probably a mousse and blow dry your hair afterwards. Toni and Guy.. go there, they'll sort you out

Also, I take it that its a process to be done just before going out for the day and wont keep if I do it the night before? (I normally wash hair in the evening not the morning)

Mornings. Always the morning and use a diffuser so you don't dry it to death. You'll find that your hair will reach an optimum length and if longer than that, you end looking more like Neil from the Young Ones (look him up if you're too young to remember!)

I do have a diffuser for my hairdryer somewhere (I deliberately bought a hairdryer that included one, just in case) and I'll have a look at mousses when I go shopping tomorrow. Can you recommend any good brands? my hair is this long at the minute and as you can see, as well as being flat it also annoyingly naturally falls in a swept back fashion - with a near-centre parting instead of the over-the-eyes look sported by Mr Jovi in the OP :

(I normally wash hair in the evening not the morning) Go to hairdresser > tell them what you want > watch what they do to style it > ask for tips about how you get the same results, what to use and how > replicate results at home. Seriously, hundreds of millions of people - men included - do this on a regular basis all over the world. It's not that difficult, it doesn't cost much, and you'll probably find life's a lot easier when you ask the right people, unless of course throwing yourself to the wolves on a forum full of blokes who enjoy taking the piss out of people is how you get your kicks. In which case carry on.

Mousse, rollers, a strong hairdryer, hairspray, maybe wax. And get it layered if you can.
